Ben Stokes reflects on World Cup win three years on from England's super over victory

Three years ago today England won the Cricket World Cup in dramatic fashion at Lord's, beating New Zealand as a result of the boundary countback rule.

Both sides scored 241 from their 50 overs and then also scored 15 in the resultant super over in one of the greatest cricket matches of all time. Ben Stokes was named player of the match after scoring an unbeaten 84 and the all-rounder reflected on the final ahead of England's second ODI against India.

The match just so happens to be getting played on the three-year anniversary of the World Cup win at the exact same venue. Reflecting on that final and the super over in an interview with Sky Sports, Stokes admitted it still gives him "goosebumps".

"I'm sure everybody's watched that final back, especially that last over, and it still gives me goosebumps watching it back," he said. "I feel like the pressure is always on the team batting first [in a super over] to get a good score on the board.

"I'm not going to lie when Jos hit the last ball for four, I celebrated like 'we've won'. 15 in a super over is unbelievable but cricket is an amazing game, it does some seriously funny things to you and it ended up going down to the last ball.

"I remember when Jof got hit for that six, I think I was at long-on and I remember turning around to the crowd and actually laughing because the game had just thrown everything at us. Then I was at long-off [for the last ball] because Martin Guptill was on strike, but I was about 15 yards off the circle because I'd rather him hit over my head than have a two hit to me.

"And then the ball didn't come to me and I'm just running in. I see the ball go to J-Roy, who's already fumbled one and threw the ball to the wrong end.

"So Jase picked the ball up [and I'm thinking] 'please be a good throw'. It's a good throw as soon as you see him let it go and then it's just 'Jos don't drop it, do not drop it'.

"Stumps off, lads start running off, I end up slipping down and just lying on the floor. It was like we were kids, everyone was just running around the outfield. It was just an unbelievable feeling."
