Ben Stokes hails "perfect" England who are "changing cricket" with "staggering" turnaround

Ben Stokes has overseen a remarkable turnaround in England's Test fortunes, with his side capping off a memorable 2022 by becoming the first team in history to whitewash Pakistan in their own backyard.

It is a stunning achievement, with Stokes labelling England's performances throughout the series "perfect" as they sealed a 74 run win in Rawalpindi, a 26 run win in Multan and an eight wicket win in Karachi.

Stokes has dovetailed perfectly with coach Brendon McCullum, creating an environment free of the fear of failure and encouraging a more positive and aggressive approach to Test cricket. When asked to sum up England's latest triumph, Stokes simply replied: "Perfect.

"We've got a process of how we want to play but one thing that has been a challenge for us this series was the different types of pitches that we've played one. We've stuck to our game plan but I think we've adapted really well, whether that be with bat or ball.

"At every point throughout the series, whoever I threw the ball to they seemed to deliver. A lot gets spoken about the way in which we bat but I think the way in which we've applied ourselves with the ball and the mindset and commitment that we've had from everyone throughout these three Test matches has been top draw.

"I think it just comes down to belief to be honest, the belief I have in the ten other guys out in the field with me. At no point throughout this series did I not believe in the team and what we were trying to do.

"The confidence every individual has in themselves and the people around them is unbelievable. To be able to lead a group that's full of that belief and confidence gives me so much confidence in myself as well and that's a very special thing to be able to say."

And former England spinner Alex Hartley believes other teams around the world will now attempt to replicate 'Bazball' given its stunning success, telling BBC Test Match Special. "It's staggering what Stokes has done. He's changed their fields and had these ultra attacking fields. It's worked for England.

"Other teams will have to take this on. Be more aggressive and ruthless. Stokes and McCullum have shown it works. This England team are changing cricket. They're playing every ball and hitting it into the gaps."
