Former Celtic star Ben Doak netted for Liverpool 's U19s to sink Rangers in the UEFA Youth League and add to his burgeoning reputation.
The 16-year-old was recently named the Anfield side's best academy product - backing up the rave reviews bestowed upon him since joining from the Premiership champions in the summer. The boyhood Celtic fan grabbed the second for the hosts during their 4-1 romp to make it three consecutive wins.
Rangers battled manfully, however, their resistance was breached in the 22nd minute when the alert Oakley William Cannonier fired home the opener. And then it was Doak's turn to get in on the act as he was on hand to tuck home from close range after Bobby Clark's effort ricocheted off the post and onto the toe of the Scotland U21 international. The Ibrox side - winners on matchday two over Napoli - didn't give up but their fate was sealed 10 minutes after the restart when Jarell Amorin Quansah struck. The skipper was dominant throughout and the goal was a reflection of his all-action efforts.
And there was a late blow as Luke Chambers rounded off an impressive day for the Reds as he found the net in added time. There was time for Connor Young to net a consolation for the Light Blues seconds before the final whistle.
Rangers will once again take on Liverpool's U19s next Wednesday. They will be under no illusions of the task facing them in the rematch on home turf against a side with real designs of going all the way with Doak and Co. And the senior side will be hoping the result at Melwood isn't a marker ahead of the big one at Anfield tonight.
