Ben Doak makes Liverpool Premier League debut as rapid rise since Celtic exit continues

Ben Doak made his Premier League for Liverpool as a late substitute during their 3-1 win over Aston Villa.

The teenage Scottish star has been catching the eye at Anfield since joining from Celtic last March. The Hoops netted a £600,000 training fee for the youngster, who has been tipped for the very top after some stunning displays for the Merseyside club’s youth teams, especially in the UEFA Youth League.

Doak made his senior debut just days after signing his first professional contract in November, having turned out for the Hoops senior squad last January. He came off the bench in a Carabao Cup win at home over Derby County, becoming the sixth youngest player to play a first team game for Liverpool. He jetted off with Jurgen Klopp ’s squad for a winter training camp in Dubai during the World Cup, and has been rewarded with his first league appearance in the victory over the Villains.

Liverpool took the lead through Mo Salah after an assist from Scotland captain Andy Robertson. That saw the left back break the record for most assists in the Premier League for a defender, overtaking former Everton star Leighton Baines by claiming the 54th of his career since leaving Dundee United for Hull City.

Former Celtic centre back Virgil Van Dijk doubled the visitor’s lead before half-time. Ollie Watkins halved the deficit in the second half with a powerful header, but Liverpool restored their two-goal advantage thanks to 18-year-old Stefan Bajcetic’s composed finish.
