Ben Davison stands by “lazy” comments towards British coaches despite backlash

Ben Davison is sticking to his guns when it comes to his comments about other British boxing coaches being "lazy".

The 29-year-old trainer works with the likes of Josh Taylor, Devin Haney, Billy Joe Saunders and Leigh Wood, having made his name coaching Tyson Fury to his 2018 boxing comeback.

And earlier this month he sparked outrage in the UK boxing scene when he slammed other coaches, saying he outworks them and that the standard of training in Britain is poor.

He told the BBC 5 Live Boxing podcast : "I feel like the level of coaching is poor in this country.

"They're lazy, that's the reality of it, I outwork them and that's the reality of it.

"They may have 30 or 40 years on me but the amount of time I spend studying the sport, my fighters, the opponents, it's unrivalled work."

And speaking to Mirror Fighting at yesterday's Belfast press conference for Leigh Wood's world featherweight title defence against Michael Conlan, he said he wouldn't be walking back his comments despite criticism.

"I'm not surprised by the reaction," Davison explained. "It's something that's not supposed to be said.

"But I wouldn't say it if I didn't believe it, you can't please everybody.

"I stand by what I said, maybe it was my fault that it wasn't understood what exactly I meant.

"But when you're doing a lot of interviews sometimes you get lost in the moment and don't think about what you're saying."

Davison was in Belfast to promote his fighter Wood's first defence of his featherweight world title, which will take place on March 12 in Nottingham.

Wood and Conlan stopped in both of their hometowns for a brief tour to promote the bout that will see 9,000 fans pack into the Motorpoint Arena for a massive night of action.

Davison was on the receiving end of a torrent of abuse from Jamie Conlan, the older brother and manager of Michael, as well as jeers from the packed crowd at the Europa Hotel.

And the 28-year-old, who hasn't lost a fight as a trainer since 2016, believes that his record will stay in tact when the pair meet in Nottingham in seven weeks' time.

"I think there are certain tendencies that Mick has which we will exploit in fight-changing moments," he said.

"Obviously, it's our job to make sure that Leigh is there to capitalise on those moments.

"I believe that Leigh will win by stoppage, but that's not to say that he has to win by stoppage.

"As I've said before, I believe there's just too much that Mick does that will leave Leigh available for a fight-changing moment and he'll be able to be there to take them."
