Rangers are set to make a move for Liverpool defender Ben Davies as they aim to find a instant replacement for outgoing Calvin Bassey, according to a report.
The 26-year-old is free to leave Anfield 18 months after his emergency transfer from Preston with Gio van Bronckhorst seeking reinforcements, as one of his key men heads to Amsterdam. Bassey will join Ajax in a £19m deal which includes significant add ons. And now the Scottish Sun state the Europa League finalists will turn their attention to the man who starred for Sheffield United on loan last season. He has been linked with Lancashire sides Burnley and Blackburn Rovers in recent days but now the Ibrox side are considering a move.
Davies was on the verge of joining Celtic in January 2021 before Jurgen Klopp came calling amid his need for new defenders. But that fairytale move hasn't resulted in competitive game time with injured trio Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all returning last season.
It appears increasingly likely that Liverpool will seek a permanent solution for a player who has three years remaining on his deal with Liverpool. It comes with Rangers boss Van Bronckhorst admitting he needs more with Bassey nearing the exit door at Ibrox.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "The squad is well at the moment. We changed the players who left and got new players in but with Calvin maybe going as well, we have to look for another player to add to the squad. "We have our list ready. So, once the deal is done we can work on another player coming in."
