Ben Davies Rangers 'handball' claim leaves referee unconvinced as he makes stark penalty admission

Former SFA referee Steve Conroy insists he was unconvinced by Hearts' penalty shout against Rangers because he's not certain Ben Davies handled the ball.

Man in the middle John Beaton was not asked to consult with VAR after waving play on as the ball hit Light Blues defender Davies inside the box. It was a Malik Tillman goal that separated the sides at Ibrox to ease pressure on under-fire boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst. However ex-grade 1 whistler Conroy can understand the Jam Tarts' frustrations at the non award but he also has serious doubts a handball took place.

"From the clips it happened so quickly I'm not even convinced it hit his arm," Conroy told the Scottish Daily Express. "So that makes any other discussion redundant. Hypothetically speaking if you believe it did hit his arm then that one is really contentious - it could be argued either way.

"I'm not sure I would be giving that one as a penalty. I'm not convinced the defender is doing anything unnatural or trying to make himself big. In this day and age, however, you're not allowed a lot of mitigation when it comes to handball. I'm not entirely convinced on that one, my instinct is I thought it hit his face."

Beaton's verdict to not give Hearts a penalty is just the latest talking point within the Scottish Premiership since the introduction of VAR three weeks ago with punters, pundits and managers wading in on the big decisions in the top flight.
