Ben Davies pinpoints Ibrox factor as Rangers attempt to salvage European campaign

BEN DAVIES has backed Rangers to salvage their European dreams at Ibrox and keep alive their chances of an extended continental run this term.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side suffered a third successive defeat on Tuesday night as they followed up the losses to Ajax and Napoli with a 2-0 reverse against Liverpool.

Rangers sit bottom of Group A after an early free-kick from Trent Alexander-Arnold and second half Mohamed Salah penalty at Anfield.

Ajax remain within touching distance, however, and Davies is confident there is better to come ahead of the Ibrox fixtures with Liverpool and the Dutch giants in the coming weeks.

Davies said: “We know their attacking threats but it was two set piece goals with the penalty and the free-kick. They had chances but overall I thought it was a very good performance.

“When there is only one goal in it then it is tight and I felt we could have maybe kept the ball a bit better in the transition.

“That might have given us a better foothold but, like I said, I thought overall the performance was sound.

“We are at the halfway point of the group now and our performances have improved each week.

“We have got two big home games out of three now and when we have got the crowd behind us we have always got a chance. I would say it is definitely not over and we know that next week is a big week.”

Rangers were outplayed throughout a one-sided affair at Anfield as the visitors found the going tough at this level once again and were fortunate not to suffer a heavy defeat.

But the performance of defender Leon King was one of the positives to take as the 18-year-old handled the occasion well on his first Champions League start.

Davies said: “I got asked about Leon before the game and I said nothing fazes him so I knew he would fit in well.

“For a player of his age to come in and perform like that is brilliant but I had confidence in him doing just that because I know what his character is like and that nothing fazes him.”
