Ben Chilwell sends emotional message after Chelsea injury and World Cup decision confirmed

Ben Chilwell has sent a message after Chelsea confirmed that he will be missing the World Cup following a 'significant injury' to his hamstring after scans.

The fullback was helped off the pitch in the final minute of Chelsea's 2-1 victory over Dinamo Zagreb after chasing a ball down and pulling up holding his hamstring.

In a statement released by the club, Chelsea confirmed that he had undergone a scan that will rule him out of Gareth Southgate's Qatar 2022 squad. Chilwell has had a tough 18 months having also missed most of last season following a damaging knee injury that came shortly after not playing a minute at Euro 2020.

Chilwell, who has been managed and rotated with new signing Marc Cucurella this season by both Graham Potter and Thomas Tuchel, tweeted: "Following my ACL injury I worked so hard to make sure I was ready for the World Cup. It has always been a dream of mine. Unfortunately, this won’t be possible following my scan results. I’ll do all I can to get back playing for Chelsea ASAP. Thanks for the messages of support."

The 25-year-old has been one of Chelsea's most important players when fit due to his ability to play as a wingback or natural fullback and has an impressive tally of eight goals and 10 assists in 68 matches from left-back. He has also built up a brilliant relationship with Reece James who is also missing due to injury.

Chelsea will now be without Chilwell for matches against Arsenal, Manchester City and Newcastle before the World Cup break which allows him time to recover before the Blues return to action on December 27th.
