Ben Chilwell ‘can’t believe’ Bukayo Saka ever played at left-back after stunning England goal

Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka enjoyed another standout performance for England on Sunday.

The 21-year-old has been leading his club’s charge for a first Premier League title in 19 years this season and, joint with Marcus Rashford, finished as the Three Lions’ top scorer at the World Cup in December with three goals.

Now a leading force for both club and country, Saka scored another brilliant goal against Ukraine in England’s Euro 2024 qualifier win at Wembley on Sunday.

Having also set up Harry Kane for his 55th England goal, the winger now looks a certainty in Gareth Southgate’s starting lineup ahead of the European Championships in Germany next summer.

That has not always been the case, with Saka deployed a left-wing back at international level as recently as September.

Still, the level of consistency he has shown on the right of an attacking three has surely made him un-droppable for England.

Teammate Ben Chilwell even admitted he “can’t believe” Saka ever played at left-back, such has been his form further forward.

“I can’t believe he (Saka) played at left-back when he can do that,” said the Chelsea defender to Hayters TV.

“Such a great talent. I think everyone can see what he gives on the pitch.

“He is one of the best people I have met in football as well. We see him on a daily basis around camp and he just brings happiness to everyone else. He is always smiling and a good guy to be around, and then he comes out on the pitch and delivers like that for us.

“An assist and a goal and it ultimately wins us the game. I am delighted for him.”
