Bemused motorists mock 'unfortunate' rude road sign

Bemused motorists have mocked a sign at a county border that now has a rather rude word on it after some of the letters appeared to have worn off. The sign on the A689 between County Durham and Cumbria, is meant to say 'Welcome to Cumbria' as drivers enter the county, but the last four letters have disappeared.

Passing motorists are instead welcomed by the rude sign 'Welcome to Cum'. It is not clear what caused the letters to fall or wear off but people have taken to social media to discuss how funny the 'embarrassing' sign is.

One social media user quipped: “I dread to even think what they’re doing up the road."

One person said: “This is a rather unfortunate and embarrassing mistake – someone hasn’t been keeping track of the signs."

The sign is just down the road from Killhope Mining Museum, an award-winning 19th century mining museum.

Mark Wilkes, a Durham County Council councillor, said: "I hope they will fix it, but a mile away from the sign is Killhope Mining Museum so if the sign attracts lots of visitors to the area, I would suggest they pop along to the museum."

Cumbria County Council has been contacted for a comment.
