Beloved Edinburgh city centre Mexican restaurant returns to market after failing to sell

Edinburgh’s oldest operating Mexican restaurant remains up for sale almost three years on from its owners announcing their intention to retire from running the popular cantina.

Viva Mexico has been a staple of Cockburn Street since 1984, but husband and wife team Julio and Judith Gonzalez opted to step back from the eatery after 35 years of serving up the “best fajitas in the Capital”.

The 80-cover restaurant, located a stone’s throw from the Royal Mile, was initially listed for offers over £1.2 million to prospective buyers.

However, the asking price has since dropped to £950,000 after failing to attract a new owner since being listed in October 2019.

According to the advert on property site Zoopla, Viva Mexico "provides a fantastic opportunity to purchase an already well established and highly regarded licenced restaurant situated in one of Edinburgh's most popular tourist areas."

It continues: "The atmosphere is welcoming thanks to the cleverly placed movable furniture and atmospheric lighting.

"The ground floor dining area provides space for 15 covers and at the rear of the room is a decorative bar area with a well-stocked gantry.

"The lower ground provides two dining rooms, the main dining room providing space for 40 covers and a conveniently placed prep area for desserts and coffees.

"The second dining area which gives access to two large storage cupboards provides room for a further 30 covers and continues the theme of the modern and vibrant Mexican decor that can be found throughout the whole of the restaurant."

The eatery reappeared on the market earlier this month, marketed by estate agent McEwan Fraser.

Speaking in 2019, Julio and Judith said: ”After 35 happy and rewarding years running our restaurant we have decided it is time to retire.

"It has been a joy (and a challenge) and we will never forget all the people-family, staff, customers and friends who have been with us on the journey and will always be grateful for all the love and support that we have received over the years."
