Beloved bakery awarded title of the best bread in Scotland at major awards

A beloved bakery in Leith has been awarded the title of the best bread in Scotland at the Scottish Bread Championship 2025.

This year, the award, which brings together breadmakers from across the country, had a record 210 entries.

Discussing the championship, co-founder Wendy Barrie said the judges this year were "full of energy and praise" for the bakers and their valuable skills.

She said the "enthusiasm" of the bakers was also "heart-warming" to see, adding that the event is a "timely reminder" of the importance of Scotland's food heritage.

She said: "We have no public funding and are indebted to The Edinburgh Bakers Trust for their unstinting support of this important event in Scotland’s food scene.”

This year's "supreme champion" at the Scottish Bread Championship was the Leith-based location Selkie Bakery which was praised for its delicious sourdough bread.

The owners took to social media to celebrate the honour, sharing a picture of their certificate on Instagram.

Customers and fellow bakers were quick to praise the Scottish location, with Station House Bakery in Haddington, East Lothian, writing: "Well deserved! Eating some now and could eat it all in one go (though really shouldnt as its a lot!!)."

One customer told the bakery: "Huge Congrats!!!! Well deserved… you make the absolute BEST bread!"

Another added: "Supreme winner !!! Go Seamus 🙌 congratulations 🎊🍾."

A third user said: "Congratulations, will be visiting in a few weeks whilst on an adventure up your neck of the woods."
