Belleek 'arson attack': Eight vehicles damaged as fire spreads to property

Several cars have been 'set alight' in a Co Armagh 'arson attack'.

Emergency services were called an incident outside a property at around 1.45am on Monday, January 17 at the Carrowbane Road, Belleek, just outside Camlough.

Police say eight vehicles were extensively damaged and that the fire spread to the home.

PSNI Detective Sergeant McCarragher added: "One van that was parked close to the front outer wall of the property was also set alight resulting in the spread of fire to the house. Thankfully no-one was present in the property. We are treating this incident as arson with intent to endanger life.

“The Carrowbane Road remains closed at this time due to icy conditions.

“Our enquiries are continuing and we would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident or who may have CCTV footage to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 86 17/01/22.”

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said five fire appliances attended the incident, two from Newry, two from Newtownhamilton and one from Warrenpoint.

"Firefighters were called to seven vehicles on fire outside a house. The fire had also spread to the house. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used six jets to extinguish the fire. The incident was dealt with by 4.40am and the cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate ignition," a spokesperson said.

A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 02.16 on Monday, 17 January 2022 following reports of an incident in the Carrowbane Road area, Belleek.

"NIAS despatched one Emergency crew to the scene.

"No one was taken from scene."
