Belgium boss and ex-Motherwell star Roberto Martinez pays surprise visit to kids football club

Belgium boss and Motherwell hero Roberto Martinez left a boys football club star-struck after making a surprise appearance at their training session.

Martinez spent a season in Lanarkshire between 2001-2002, making 16 appearances for the Steelmen and it's a spell he has often spoken about as shaping him as a manager.

He also met his wife Beth while playing for the club.

Now the manager of the Belgium national side, he led the Red Devils to a third-place finish at the last World Cup in 2018 and the quarter-finals at Euro 2020.

And it seems he still has a soft spot for Motherwell after dropping in on local side Motherwell Phoenix earlier this week and posing for pictures with youngsters.

The club, who have teams from 2008s to 2016s age level, were stunned to see the famous face take in their training session at the Billy McNeil Sports Park in Motherwell - a stone's throw from Fir Park - earlier this week.

Motherwell Phoenix posted on their Twitter page: "It's not everyday Roberto Martinez turns up and watches your training session and took a genuine interest in our club.

"We look forward to welcoming him back in the future.

"Looks like we now have a second national team to support."

Martinez's assistant with Belgium is former Celtic and Scotland star Shaun Maloney.
