Belfast Zoo experiencing another busy day as motorists warned of delays in the area

Police in North Belfast have asked drivers to be "mindful and considerate" as Belfast Zoo experiences another busy day.

Posting on social media, they said motorists should leave extra time for their journeys as a result of queues into the zoo leading to a build up of traffic in the area.

They also advised that drivers should not park on double yellow lines, and be "mindful and considerate" when it comes to parking.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Belfast Zoo is currently experiencing a busy period. Motorists are advised of delays in the area. Please be mindful and considerate in relation to parking.

"Please allow extra time for your journey. Do not park on double yellow lines. Enjoy your day."

It comes after Belfast Zoo experienced a busy day yesterday, Easter Monday.

Queues stretched down the Antrim Road and Whitewell Road, with Trafficwatch NI advising motorists to travel via the M2 to avoid delays in both directions.

Trafficwatch have said the delays on approach to the zoo don't appear to be as bad as they were yesterday.

It emerged last week that Belfast Zoo is looking to "phase out" the elephants from its animal collection.

The rescues, both in their 40s, were given sanctuary at the attraction after years working in the entertainment and logging industries.

But now management at the zoo say they are being relocated after a decision was taken to phase the species out of the zoo's animal collection.

A source has hit out at the move which they say should have been run past ratepayers who fund the attraction.
