Belfast schoolgirl chops off her locks to donate to cancer charity

A caring schoolgirl has cut off her long locks to donate to a leading children's cancer charity.

Clara-Jane McCrea, 7, from West Belfast has given her luscious locks to The Little Princess Trust, a charity that makes human hair wigs for children going through cancer treatment.

After fully growing her hair, Clara-Jane, a pupil at St Kevin's Primary School and an U8 player with Gort na Móna CLG, headed to Sainsburys in the Kennedy Centre last Saturday for a donation drive.

Clara-Jane's proud family says she is always looking for ways to help make the world a better place.

She has recently started helping her aunt Michelle McCrea by volunteering with Homeless Period Belfast, a campaign providing care-packs filled with sanitary donations to women in need across Belfast.

Michelle told Belfast Live : "The charity provides real hair wigs for children and young people also aid in the vital research into all childhood cancers. It costs around £550 to make one of these real hair wigs.

"Towards the end of her donation drive, Clara-Jane donated approximately 16 inches (41 cms) of her own gorgeous long black hair for this charity. Clara-Jane is an amazing young lady who is determined to make a difference to as many little princesses as she can.

"When she overheard a conversation her mum was having with another mummy whose child was donating her hair, Clara-Jane immediately said that she'd like to do it too.

"Over the years I have done a lot of volunteering with the homeless and she has always been asking when will she be old enough to help me.

"At the age of five she was already saying that there should be no homeless people and they should all have beds - it would break your heart."

Clara-Jane's mum Sandra added: "She felt very brave doing it and she's very proud of herself. I always knew she wanted to do something like this as she's always asking how she can help the world.

"I had originally said to her would she not wait until next year when she'll be making her First Communion and her response was that all the wee children with cancer can't wait until next year.

"I realised that she was absolutely right and fair play to her. She went ahead with the charity hair cut at Sainsburys last Saturday and it was finished off by Heather, owner of Crimpers Hair and Beauty Salon on the Stewartstown Road."

You can still donate to Clara-Jane's fundraiser through Michelle's PayPal account mccrea58@hotmail.com, quoting 'Clara-Jane' in the message.
