Belfast mum blown away by response to fundraiser to help her make final memories with her babies

A young woman who has been given a terminal cancer diagnosis says she is blown away by a fundraiser set up by her friends.

After a rare cancer diagnosis on her 42nd birthday, Liathán O'Donnchadha went through a gruelling treatment plan, which took her away form her young children Eireann, 10, and Lochlann, 5.

The Moyard woman celebrated with her children, on November 10, 2022, as she learned she was free from the disease. But now, she has been told her health has deteriorated again, only this time, it is terminal.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Liathán said: "I'm heartbroken. I don't want to leave my babies. They need me."

In the last number of hours, over £8,000 has been raised through a Go Fund Me page, set up by Liathán's friends. It has been started to allow the young mother to make final memories with her children, and attend a dream trip to Donegal.

The fundraiser reads: "Most of you know or may have seen back in November on Belfast Live the video of our friend breaking the news to her young daughter that she had got the all clear from her cancer diagnosis.

"Sadly after only six months of being being cancer free, Liathán got the devastating news that the cancer has returned only this time far more aggressive and unfortunately terminal leaving Liathán only a few short months with her two young children.

"We as Liathán's friends would like to raise some funds so that she can make some final happy memories for her children to have in these unforeseen circumstances.

"Liathán's dream would be a trip to Donegal, a place she loves and has fond memories of. Her dream is that she could spend her last holiday there with the kids.

"If you would like to help a small donation would be greatly appreciated."

Responding to the thousands raised on the Go Fund Me, Liathán said she "has no words" to describe how she is feeling, after seeing the fundraiser.

"I've no words for the amount of money that my friends have raised so far, to enable me an my two beautiful babies to make some amazing memories," she added.

"From the bottom of my heart I thank each and everyone who donated, you are just the best bunch of humans. I would like to thank my friends. Wow girls. This has blown right up. Me and my kids are going to have the best time."
