Belfast family cafe celebrates 12 years serving 'a great wee community'

A Belfast cafe has plenty to be joyful about this week, as they celebrate their 12th year in business.

Bluebells Cafe, on the Cavehill Road, is owned by Kiera McGuinnes, who is originally from West Belfast. Serving everything from all-day frys, freshly baked treats and of course, your Belfast bap, Bluebells has gone from strength to strength over the last decade.

But it wasn't always smooth sailing, Kiera told Belfast Live, opening up about how she took on the business after just having her daughter.

"I moved over here in 2006 and we first owned The Cave, the newsagents a few doors up," she said.

"This opened in 2009 and after about a year and a half, the doors were closed. I saw an opportunity there, and took it on myself.

"I did have a lot of hospitality experience, and as a kid I always worked after school, in restaurants and the hospitality industry. Even though it was in the middle of the recession in 2011, I couldn't pass up on the opportunity.

"The guy closed the doors and I reopened them a couple of weeks later and worked very hard for three years, taking no money, to get to where we are now. It was called Bluebells then, and it still is now. At the time, I couldn't afford to change the signs.

"I had just had my daughter too, she was only nine months old so I had to put her into full-time nursery which was extremely hard. It took my three years to turn it around, and around 2013, I borrowed some money and really put my everything into it.

"Bluebells then started to take off."

The cafe opens Monday to Friday 8am-4pm and then to 3pm on a Saturday. If they have functions, they will open on a Sunday too, so that their customers aren't missing out.

Bluebells serves breakfast all day, and fresh sandwiches and sweet treats. The close knit team is seeing children coming in and growing into young adults, and families using their business as their local morning stop off.

"We have so many regulars," Kiera added.

"There are customers who would come in and we'd have their breakfast on before they have even sat down, and ordered. We know what they are here for, and that they'll always get is good food and a friendly face.

"Because we owned the paper shop next door, we would have had kids doing the paper round for us, and now they're coming into Bluebirds in suits, going to work. It's surreal.

"Even my own wee girl, because she was a baby when we opened the business, she's grown with it. She is now 13, and it's just like 'wow'.

"My son James works with me, Mandy has been with us for years, Donna is my part-time manager, Christopher is our new chef, Trevor, the delivery guy, has been here for 12 years. The team we have here is second to none.

"I just love the job, and the local people. We can't thank them enough for their support and I'd like to be here for another 12 years. No matter what people are coming in for, we just really appreciate it."
