Belfast double amputee left devastated after mobility scooter stolen and wrecked

A West Belfast man, who relies on his mobility scooter every day, has been left home-bound after it was stolen and damaged beyond repair.

John McGill, who had both legs amputated due to problems with his circulation, lives in Helens Wood Court. On Tuesday, his scooter was stolen from the building.

The 63-year-old said he never thought he would have to worry about the scooter being stolen.

"It was found yesterday by a friend and it was on the Suffolk Road in bits," he told Belfast Live.

"I am now completely without. It was taken on Tuesday from inside the building of my flat. Two years ago I lost my leg, and last year I lost the second leg. This scooter was my lifeline.

"The community tried to help me get it back. But now I am going to have to buy another one, from somewhere. I bought the last one myself, and it was £500 and a lot of money for me.

"I had no insurance on it, I mean, who would steal a mobility scooter? It is now in pieces."

Police say they are investigating the report of the theft of Mr McGill's mobility scooter.

"It was reported at around 1.40pm that sometime between 10pm on Monday, February 6th and 1.30pm on Tuesday, February 7th a mobility scooter had been stolen from the ground floor of an apartment block in the Helens Court Wood area," a PSNI spokesperson said.

"Enquiries are ongoing and police would appeal to anyone with any information in relation to the incident to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1017 of 07/02/23.

"A report can be made using the online reporting form via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport. Information can also be provided to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org."
