Belfast couple left homeless with newborn after tumble dryer fire

A young West Belfast family has been left heartbroken after their home was wrecked in a blaze on Saturday.

Claire Tolan and her fiance Jackie Dynes, are now homeless and staying with family, along with their newborn baby Darcie.

Their circumstances come after their tumble dryer caught fire at the weekend, destroying their home and belongings.

The pair, who are getting married in June, live on Brighton Street, just off the Falls Road.

Speaking to Belfast Live on Monday morning, Claire Tolan said she feels like they are "living a bad dream".

"It was Saturday evening at about 6.30pm - my niece had called to my house looking for clothes for her mummy to wear and I went down to their house, which is a few doors down, to drop them off. They were going to the Little Mix concert.

"Minutes later I could hear Jackie's voice shouting my name. I could hear the fear in his voice and he was carrying Darcie in his arms - I thought it was her, I thought she wasn't breathing.

"When I got to him he just said 'our house is on fire'. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I stood at the bottom of our path and watched as the smoke just came out of everywhere.

"From where I was standing, all I could see was my daughter's pram and I wanted to go in and save it but the fire was blazing. There was no way anything could be salvaged.

"The whole street was out and one of our neighbours had phoned the fire brigade. We had thought, because of where it was, that it was the gas boiler. That's what we had told the fire service and they were there instantly, within minutes."

When Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service personnel came out of Claire and Jackie's home, which they have lived in for five years, they confirmed that the fire came from the tumble drier.

Claire says this revelation left them "baffled" as she says their drier had not been on for six hours.

"I wouldn't use it really often, but I had it on that morning drying bed clothes," she continued.

"We just couldn't believe it. The fireman said we had to be thankful that this didn't happen in the middle of the night because we wouldn't have made it out alive.

"There's no way the three of us would have made it out alive it it had happened any other time. Which is a really scary thought. We don't have any of our belongings. We have the clothes on our backs, that is all.

"The damage is terrible, we are going to be out of the house for six months. It is devastating. We have owned this house for five years, and now we are living with my mummy."

Claire and Jackie are due to get married surrounded by friends and family in less than eleven weeks - something they are using to get through the pain of their home fire.

The community has reacted with compassion to the young family, offering them help and support for anything they need - they say people have been "just absolutely amazing".

A Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue spokesperson said two appliances from Springfield Fire Station attended the incident.

He added: "Firefighters were called to reports of a fire in the kitchen of a property in Belfast. Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used 2 jets to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental ignition and the incident was dealt with by 7.31pm."
