Belfast City Council services may see disruption during seven-day strike

Belfast City Council has warned of some disruption to its services as a result of a seven-day strike by Unite the Union next week.

The industrial action will begin on Monday 21 March to Sunday 27 March, impacting on local government services across Northern Ireland, as well as in England and Wales.

The majority of services are expected to operate as normal, or with minimal disruption, but it is likely the industrial action will have an impact on some waste collection and street cleansing routes, as well as other frontline services and council venues.

The council says it is working to minimise the impact on residents and businesses and will provide regular updates throughout the week via their website and social media channels.

Likely areas of disruption:

  • Household bins and wheeled boxes should be presented as normal for collection and, if not emptied as planned, should be brought back in and left out on the next scheduled collection date. This also applies to commercial waste collections. Bryson Recycling box collections will all take place as normal.
  • Customers with a free bulky waste collection booking between 21-27 March will be contacted directly if their booking is impacted.
  • Some household recycling centres and civic amenity sites may be closed – please check our website and social media channels before travelling.
  • Some other council venues and services may be closed at various times throughout the week. This includes City Hall, Belfast Zoo, community centres, play centres, pitches, bowling greens, parks and public toilets, and services including pest control, noise control and dog wardens.

All burial and cremation services will continue to operate as normal throughout the week. Death registrations will also take place as normal.

A BCC spokesperson said: "The industrial action, which is taking place across NI councils and other public sector organisations, is in relation to NJC pay, which is negotiated nationally for England, Wales and Northern Ireland by the National Employers for Local Government Services.

"Belfast City Council then implements the outcome of these negotiations.

"Residents are encouraged to keep updated on the latest info, via our website and social media channels."
