Belfast Barclays Bank protest sees two people charged after building targeted with red paint

A man and a woman have been charged after a protest at Barclays Bank in Belfast city centre.

It's understood Extinction Rebellion activists sprayed red paint over the Castle Place building on Monday, November 14.

Protestors had said the action was to draw attention to the “impunity with which Barclays continues to fund and profit from new fossil fuels”.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "A 33-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman have been charged with criminal damage, disorderly behaviour and burglary with intent to cause unlawful damage and are expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court on December 9th.

"As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

"The pair were arrested on Monday, November 14th after paint was thrown over a bank on Castle Place in Belfast city centre during a protest involving three people."

In a notice posted on the door of the building after the protest, Barclays said: "Sorry, but due to circumstances beyond our control we are unable to open this branch at the moment.

"We're doing everything we can to get things up and running again. In the meantime please accept our apologies."
