The Ukrainian government has said Belarus has joined Russia in the invasion of Ukraine. However, this has not been independently verified.
The claim was made on twitter this morning from the Ukrainian parliament's account, the Mirror reports. The tweet said: "Belarusian troops have entered Chernihiv region.
"The information was confirmed to the public by Vitaliy Kyrylov, spokesman for the North Territorial Defence Forces.”
Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko said on twitter this morning: "Belarus sends troops and they cross border of Ukraine through Chernihiv. Now Russian's interest in Lukashenka is absolutely clear. People of Belarus your country is now a military launch pad."
The Latvian Defence Minister, Dr Atis Pabriks told the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee: “This basically means we have two aggressives at this moment officially."
The reported incursion comes a day after a Ukrainian delegation held talks with Russian officials at the border with Belarus, though they ended with no agreements except to keep talking.
The Belarusian president Aleksandr Lukashenko - a supporter of Russian leader Vladimir Putin - has said he had no plans to join the war.
Russian shelling has again pounded civilian targets in Ukraine’s second-largest city of Kharkiv and a 40-mile convoy of tanks and other military vehicles threatened the capital, Kyiv.
With the Kremlin increasingly isolated by economic sanctions that have tanked the rouble currency, Russian troops attempted to advance on Ukraine’s two biggest cities.
