Born in Anshan, China, Beiwen Zhang grew up with a singular focus on badminton. Her parents put a badminton racket in Beiwen’s hands when she was just five. Her talent shone brightly, and she quickly rose through the ranks of China's highly competitive junior badminton scene.
At 13, Zhang was chosen to train at the prestigious national team in Beijing, but destiny had other plans. Family tragedy struck, and Zhang was forced to move to the United States.
In America, she chose to retain her passion for badminton, but lacked competitive opportunities. With no national government support available to her, she had to rely on individual sponsors and interested clubs to fund her journey. Despite these challenges, Zhang focused on her training, even choosing to take a job at a gym to sustain her commitment to the sport.
Over time, her concentrated efforts began to bear fruit. She achieved a career-best ranking of 9 at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings in 2016, trained rigorously and saw great success at the local and international level.
