Being a 'nice' driver could lead to a £1,000 fine. Motorists who are extra courteous in trying to help others on the roads could be left in hot water with the police.
The act of flashing lights to signal to other drivers speed cameras are ahead can be met with a hefty fine and points on your licence. WalesOnline reports drivers can also get into trouble when beeping the horn when going around tight bends to warn other drivers.
New research from price comparison website, comparethemarket.com, found that a shocking 37% of motorists were unaware that flashing their lights at another road user to warn them of an upcoming "speed trap", such as a speed camera or police officer with a speed gun, could land them with a £1,000 fine and three points on their licence.

Further research found that "waving to say thankyou" is the UK's most common driving courtesy, with nearly two-thirds of drivers doing so, whilst turning off your full beam when other drivers are coming towards you and giving more room to learner drivers follow as the second and third most common acts of driving courtesy on UK roads.
But whilst these courtesies are legal - and kind and helpful things to do - other driving courtesies are actually against the law. As well as flashing your lights to indicate to others of an upcoming speed trap, you can also be punished for "beeping your horn when going around tight bends" and for "using your hazard lights to say thankyou to someone behind you".
According to the price comparison site, the fine for beeping your horn around tight bends is £1,000 (but with no points added to your licence) - but if you use your hazards to thank a driver behind you, you face an UNLIMITED fine and up to nine points on your licence.
