What’s new: Yu Luming, head of the Beijing Municipal Health Commission, has been removed from his position one month after being placed under investigation by the Communist Party’s corruption watchdog.
The standing committee of the Beijing Municipal People’s Congress announced Yu’s removal Wednesday. Yu was previously vice chairman of the capital’s political advisory body, the People’s Political Consultative Conference
The background: In mid-April, the party’s top anti-graft body, the Central Commission on Discipline and Inspection, announced that Yu was under internal investigation for “serious violations of discipline and laws,” without elaboration. The phrase is a standard euphemism for graft.
Beijing has in recent weeks been battling its biggest-ever outbreak of Covid-19. The city has logged over 1,500 cases since April 22.
