Beijing 2022 resembles science fiction as robots clean and serve cocktails behind scenes

Judging by some of the gadgets in use, anyone entering the Olympic village might be forgiven for thinking they had wandered into a sci-fi film.

At the Winter Olympics there are plenty of staff working to cater to the needs of competitors – but they also have some help from their robot friends.

In Beijing, there are machines being used to cook, deliver food, make cocktails, clean the floors, check people's temperatures and remind them to wear a mask.

China wanted to use the Games as an opportunity to show off in front of the world, and it seems some of their technology in use has got people talking.

In the media centre, food is prepared by an army of robots including one which appears to be frying chips and another which whips up some cocktails without the need to tip the bartender.

Another machine can be seen manning a coffee stand, making hot beverages and even cleaning up after itself once it has done.

It isn't always smooth sailing, though, as BBC Sport reporter Anna Thompson discovered when she encountered a robot which seemed a little lost in a lift.

One of the more stand-out 'workers' at the Olympic village is a UFO-style machine which flies through the air to deliver food to athletes.

That operation was shown in footage shared by German outlet Bild, as the UFO can be seen moving around through a network of glass tunnels built into the roof of the food hall.

The process minimises athletes' contact with other people, meaning there is a lower likelihood of them coming across someone who is carrying Covid.

People also do not need to approach the robots themselves to order – all they need to do to choose what they want to eat or drink is scan a QR code.

See-through panels are also in place between tables, while another army of robots goes around spraying disinfectant on surfaces where people have been sitting.

Another place the have to disinfect are the 'sleep rest cabins' dotted around the village, which give athletes the chance to grab a quick snooze without returning to their room.

Not only do these innovations help to prevent the spread of the virus within the Olympic village, but they also give China a chance to show off their technological advances.

Perhaps one day in the future all restaurants will feature UFOs which deliver food to punters.
