It is only fitting that any veteran quarterback who even might potentially be on the trading block this offseason be somehow anecdotally linked to the Pittsburgh Steelers. This is why I would be remiss if I didn’t talk a little about the story surrounding Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray.
Some internet sleuths discovered that Murray had cut ties with the Cardinals on all social media channels. In 2022 this means a breakup is almost certainly pending. It’s basically a passive-aggressive way for a grown man to show he wants to be traded without actually saying he wants to be traded.
Enter the Steelers. If we are going to contemplate scenarios that would bring in guys like Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson, the same can be done for Murray. In fact, I’d put Murray ahead of all three of the other unrealistic candidates. Murray is an elite young talent in this league and the template for what a modern NFL quarterback is. Huge arm, elite athleticism and high football acumen.
Having said all this, there’s no way the Steelers are going to mortgage the future for Murray, should he actually become available. But if there was a guy you could actually build a team around and not just an expensive rental, Murray, followed by Watson, would be the ways to go.
