Beeston woman 'scared' after fire destroys her car and two others on street

A Beeston woman says that she was left with "goosebumps" after her car was 'burnt down' in the early hours of the morning. Petra Jakus, 35, moved to Nottinghamshire from London and says that she has never had any trouble at her address on Anslow Avenue before.

But at around 4.30am on Sunday (October 2), Petra's car was on fire and the splitting of its fuel tank meant that two other cars on the street were destroyed as well. Petra said: "It looks like they burnt my car down on purpose and then the two other cars were destroyed when the fuel leaked down the road.

"It could have been that my car was chosen completely at random, but I would just like to be sure because this has left me and my partner scared. This has to be stopped because we came to Beeston six years ago and we have never had any problems, we love Nottingham.

"I only realised something had happened when the police knocked on my door at about 5.30am and I went out straight away to see the damage. I saw how big the fire was on a neighbour's camera and it left me with goosebumps, because it made me think that a fire like that could easily kill someone in a property if it happens again."

Petra Jakus works as a chef and says that despite her Citroen C4 being destroyed, her set of kitchen knives which she had kept in a toolbox remained intact. This was a big relief to her given that she says the knives were worth more than her car.

But Petra added: "The other two cars on the street were more expensive because there was a Peugeot 208 which was six years old and a Ford Fiesta which was just four years old so they will get more in terms of damage than me. I obviously used my car for work and everything but I should hopefully be able to arrange a courtesy car on Monday."

Stapleford Fire Station confirmed that it supported firefighters from the Highfields station in dealing with the incident. The fire service said that two firefighters in breathing apparatus used hose reel jets to put the three car fires out, and that Nottinghamshire Police were now looking into the circumstances of the incident.
