Beeston venue set to become Budapest-style ruin bar for one night

A Beeston venue is set to become a Budapest-style ruin bar for one night only. The Garage events venue on Chilwell is re-launching their popular The Ruin Bar experience this weekend on Saturday, May 7 from 5 pm until 11:30.

Visitors can feel like they have jetted off to Europe rather than an old bus depot in Beeston. Ruin bars are said to have originated from a group of young men who wanted cheap venues to drink in so they used derelict buildings and unused outdoor spaces to hold events. The result has been a boom in Budapest's busy nightlife and tourism.

The event will also have a range of themed cocktails and some of Nottingham's finest craft beers. There will be food available too including wood-fired pizzas from Zenzerro's Pizza.

The bar was named in Nottinghamshire Live’s top 10 coolest and quirkiest bars in Nottinghamshire of 2021. The cocktails will be provided by a beautifully restored vintage mobile cocktail bar.

James Barton, one of the event organisers said: “Ruin Bars are set in old, previously abandoned spaces famously found Budapest, the capital city of Hungary.”

“We take this concept and combine it with the atmosphere and history of The Garage to bring you one of the most unique venues to visit in Nottingham. Expect to find old buses, bikes, historic Nottingham relics and nature taking over as our themed abandoned bar seemingly springs to life after years of being untouched.”

"There simply nowhere quite like it in the East Midlands.”

The event is held in the old Barton's bus garage which is filled with Nottingham transport relics such as old buses and bikes. The building was first used as the home of Barton Transport Limited (Bartons) from 1913.

When the bus company was sold in 1989, The Garage has been used in a number of different ways. Most recently the firm experimented with finding artistic uses for the remaining garages including Sunday markets, pop-up cinemas and evening events.
