Neighbours in Beeston are trying to stay 'positive' but have expressed their sadness as a popular former shop was demolished. Work has taken place on the former King Carpets store, on the corner of Marlborough Road and High Road, to make way for student flats.
Developers were successful in appealing a Broxtowe borough council decision to turn down those plans which were subsequently approved. Now, the site will see a brand new student block with 41 student flats.
“To see it gone is sad - Beeston has completely changed,” said Audrey Edwards. “The landscape looks different now, this has been here my whole life, this building. It’s just sad, I suppose it will be nice when it’s done. There’s no good moaning about it.”

The 87-year-old added that she moved to a property 20 years ago near the Broadgate House, which is currently being turned into an 84-bed student accommodation. She has been affected by noise and dust, however is trying to stay ‘positive’ about the student plans throughout the town.
She continued: “When I came here 20 years ago, it was a lovely place to be, now it’s surrounded by students. I’ve got this lovely place. It is nice but there's a lot of dust and noise. I suppose it will be nice when it’s finished.”
23-year-old Fred Hendry-Brias, who works at The Little Plant Guys on High Road said: “I came down properly in the past two days. We don’t mind at all. I think it’s quite beneficial to us.”
Fred highlighted how they have another store in the city and they benefit from the students due to having a ‘workshop’ space there.
He added: “I don’t personally see it as a bad thing, The younger people are bringing life to the city. All it’s been doing is sitting there for a few years.
“Ultimately when the students go home Nottingham is so empty, they bring a lot of life. I don't really see it negatively.”
57-year-old Chris Davis said: “I knew that this would happen eventually. They’re also putting another student block there [Broadgate House].
“It’s tough because students do bring a lot to the area, but at the same time how many student blocks do we need. It’s a bit late now, but they could have done something with the original building. “
