Bedroom color ideas

Choosing your bedroom color ideas is the first step on the ladder to a successful bedroom scheme. Whether you lean maximalist or minimalist, the hues you choose will make all the difference in the way the room looks and feels.

1. Drench in a deep shade

(Image credit: Becky Shea Design / Photography Sean Litchfield)

If you’re looking to create a bold yet cocooning atmosphere in your bedroom, color drenching in a deep shade is one of the most transformative ways to cozy up the space.

'I’m advocating for darker bedrooms in 202, something I’ve embraced in my own home for years,' says interior designer Becky Shea. 'I find them incredibly sultry, warm, and inviting. Dark paints create a sense of comfort that light bedrooms often can’t quite achieve. The way they absorb light makes them feel effortlessly cozy and cocoon-like. I also love the drama and depth that dark walls bring, especially when contrasted with lighter elements like a headboard or rug. For me, it’s all about complementary tension, and this is one of my favorite ways to achieve it!'

Designer Bethany Adams agrees, saying: 'Morning people often appreciate a bold, zingy bedroom and 2025 is the year to embrace unique colors, patterns, and textures all over your home, but especially in your bedroom, she suggests. 'If you love the idea of going wild, but are more of a night owl, drench your bedroom in gorgeous and luxurious deep shade like Benjamin Moore's 'Gentleman's Gray' and add character with artwork and accessories.'

2. Choose a rich, relaxing brown

(Image credit: Bethany Adams / Photography JL Jordan )

Decorating with brown is a divisive paint idea but one that remains at the top of designers' lists when looking for colors that make a bedroom feel warmer.

As Bethany Adams explains, Pantone's color of the year for 2025 is a perfect pick for a bedroom that you want to feel warming and comfortable. 'If your bedroom is your haven, consider Pantone's color of the year, 'Mocha Mousse',' Bethany suggests. 'It's the perfect backdrop to rich, relaxing browns, soothing ivory, and if you're feeling like a pop of color, a russet orange.'

Vyanca Soto, owner and principal designer at Market Studio Interiors says: 'This year, we can expect to see a move away from stark minimalism and into spaces that feel soulful and collected. Think warm, enveloping tones like deep taupes, rich ochres, and moody plums that cocoon a space in comfort.'

3. Appeal to the senses with calming blues

(Image credit: Vaughan Design & Development / Photography Chris Snook)

For a bedroom that promotes relaxation and restoration, turning to calming blues is a timeless and expert-approved choice.

Blue bedroom ideas have long been associated with tranquility and serenity, making it a natural fit for a restful sleep space. Think soft sky tones, muted teals, and deeper, inky blues that have an inherently soothing effect on the mind.

'Spaces that appeal to more than just sight have a deeper emotional resonance, making them more enjoyable and functional,' explains interior designer Portia Fox. 'For instance, bedrooms are meant to be sanctuaries for rest, and their design should support that purpose. Bright, stimulating colors like red or orange can be overwhelming and counterproductive to relaxation.'

'Instead, painting the walls in soft, calming hues such as blues or greys, and incorporating soothing elements like fresh linen or lavender-scented candles, can foster a sense of calm and promote better sleep.'

4. Layer white on white

White bedroom ideas flood a room with light, making it feel larger and airier. However, white needn't be as bland as it sounds – in fact, the secret to success is to layer different tones of white and other pale neutrals.

While some may fear an all-white space feeling stark or sterile when done correctly, this approach creates a luxuriously soft and inviting atmosphere.‘That’s more interesting than just pure white,’ says artist and color expert Annie Sloan. ‘Lots of different whites create a softer look, mixing painted white furniture, white linens, and white cotton. You can’t go wrong.’

For a more contemporary look, you can play with gray tones too which adds interest with textures like marble, as seen above. The key to making an all-white bedroom work is to incorporate depth through texture and subtle tonal variations.

5. Choose a soft green that aids rest

(Image credit: Future / Polly Wreford)

As beautiful as you want a bedroom to be, its decor scheme must aid sleep. Green bedroom ideas are known for being inherently restful, helping you to sleep better while enhancing space and light.

Green has a deeply soothing effect on the nervous system, helping to create a restorative environment. Rooted in nature, shades of sage, olive, and muted eucalyptus evoke a sense of calm, making green one of the best colors for fostering a connection to nature indoors and biophilic design.

Look to add contrast and create layers of interest with accent colors like punchy reds or a soft pink, as seen in this tranquil bedroom above.

6. Play to the coziness of black

While black might not be the first color that comes to mind for a bedroom, it’s becoming an increasingly popular choice for those looking to create a cocooning, intimate retreat. Black bedroom ideas are a daring choice, but this color needn't feel cold. In fact, this chic shade can feel warm and cozy with a few vital elements, as showcased in the room above.

The first is the one-color scheme – if you put black with black, it can actually feel warmer than if you add white to the scheme with high contrast. The second is the presence of warm wood in the room, in both the flooring and furniture. This is heightened in this bedroom by the use of mottled warm metallics.

At night, of course, a warm lightbulb will ensure the light reflected off the ceiling is warm and welcoming. These design tricks work really well with gray, too.

7. Embrace unexpected red

Just as daring as black, red bedroom ideas can change dramatically, depending on the time of day. On a bright morning, they will feel incredibly rich; on cold, dull afternoons or dark evenings, they will feel cozy and cocooning.

‘Small rooms, even poorly lit, can take more color than you can imagine,’ explains Patrick O’Donnell, Brand Ambassador at Farrow & Ball. ‘These shades are ideal in bedrooms with darker furniture – to make them soften into the walls.'

Taking the internet by storm last year, the unexpected red theory totally transformed the way we look at decorating with red. While you can of course take a bold approach on your walls, even small pops of red will make a big impact on a neutral or softer hued bedroom.

8. Pick pastel shades for delicate ambiance

(Image credit: TROVE by Studio Duggan)

While nothing new, pastel room ideas have long been celebrated for their ability to add a touch of romance and prettiness to a space.

Decorating with pastel, gentle hues like blush pink, powder blue, lavender, and 2025's favorite hue: buttery yellow; creates a delicate ambiance that enhances relaxation while still adding a touch of personality. Yellow bedroom ideas might sound a little bold – although it's a sure way to wake up happy – so if you're looking for an alternative you can never go wrong with pink bedroom ideas.

Go unabashedly girly in your boudoir by choosing pastel-patterned wallpaper. But be sure to opt for a bold pattern to keep the room grown-up, rather than veering into little girl's bedroom ideas territory.

Bedroom layout ideas

A well-planned bedroom layout is essential for creating a space that feels both functional and thoughtful. Whether you’re working with a small bedroom layout or a spacious primary suite, clever furniture placement and design choices can make all the difference in maximizing comfort and flow.

1. Use rugs to zone the room

Zoning a bedroom can so easily be done using rugs, while also infusing the room with texture, warmth, and visual interest. Ground your space with a large area rug placed right under the bed, and use a second rug to zone a dressing area or desk space. Rugs create visual boundaries that help organize the room without the need for physical barriers.

They add plenty of softness underfoot, plus are a great way to bring in some color and pattern. And rugs are simple to switch out so they give you lots of opportunities to change with trends, tastes, and seasons.

‘We like to use a circular rug to provide a safe landing for a comfy reading chair and ottoman which can otherwise feel as though they are floating within the room, and then ensure the bed has its own rug helping to define that area,’ says Kevin Sawyers, of Sawyers Design.

2. Creating a dedicated seating area

(Image credit: Frank & Co. / Photography Ryan Hainey)

Whether it’s a cozy reading nook, a small bench at the foot of the bed, or a fully furnished lounge space in a larger suite, a well-designed seating area brings a sense of luxury to a bedroom.

'The brief for this primary bedroom [seen above] was rooted in creating a beautiful and inspiring space for young parents to unwind at the end of a long day,' says Emily Frank of Frank & Co. 'So we created a lounge area for them. Drinks for adults at night and coffee and kid cuddles come morning.'

'As always we thrive on adding vintage pieces into the mix, and in this case, we loved adding in a vintage chinois-inspired hand-carved coffee table in the sitting area,' she explains of this moody bedroom painted in Farrow & Ball's Down Pipe.

When designing a seating area, placement is key. In a spacious bedroom, positioning a loveseat or armchairs near a window takes advantage of natural light. If space is more limited, a simple accent chair in a corner with a small side table can serve as a functional yet stylish spot to unwind.

3. Use symmetry for a neat look

(Image credit: Marie Flanigan Interiors / Photography Julie Soefer)

Decorating with symmetry is a fail-safe design rule. Symmetry is one of the simplest yet most effective principles in bedroom design, creating a sense of order, balance, and visual harmony.

This provides a structured, intentional look that helps the bedroom feel more restful. It brings a sense of balance, which is particularly beneficial in a space meant for relaxation. Try to frame the bed with a bedside table on each side of it to create a mirror image on each side of the axis.

The room should be centered symmetrically around the bed with an equal distribution of objects and furniture around it. Pair small items too like table lamps and window dressings, as seen in the bedroom above designed by Marie Flanigan.

4. Focus furniture placement around daylight or a view

One of the biggest bedroom layout mistakes we often see is failing to thoughtfully position furniture to take advantage of daylight or a scenic outlook. This simple reshuffled can make the space feel more open, inviting, and harmonious.

A well-placed bed, desk, or seating area that embraces natural light will always feel more restful and considered. This is fairly easy to achieve – if you have a stunning view, consider orienting the bed so you can wake up to it every morning, and even in smaller spaces, positioning a mirror to reflect natural light can amplify the brightness and give the illusion of a larger, airier room.

Set the style tone for the room with your bedroom curtain ideas – simple white Venetian blinds suit a contemporary, pared-back scheme, or heavy curtains add luxury in more lavish spaces.

Bedroom decor ideas

The right decor can transform a bedroom. Whether you prefer a minimalist aesthetic or a layered, cozy feel, thoughtful decorative choices help bring the room to life and should reflect your personality while fostering a sense of relaxation.

1. Dare to pattern drench

(Image credit: Wendy Labrum Interiors / Photography Aimée Mazzenga)

Interior designer Wendy Labrum of Wendy Labrum Interiors, who designed this enveloping space seen above, champions the most daring bedroom trend for 2025, convincing us all to lean into the pattern drenching trend.

'A bedroom idea for 2025 is working the same pattern into multiple planes of the room, for instance, in drapery fabric, upholstery, and walls,' Wendy explains. 'It helps even a small space feel cohesive and full of character.' Florals, stripes, or even subtle geometric prints can all work beautifully, especially when applied to walls, curtains, bedding, and upholstery in varying scales.

Jenna Kincaid, creative director at Lulu & Georgia agrees.' A lot more layering and a lot of pattern play is on our radar at the moment,' she explains. 'We're loving maximalist bedrooms that mix prints like florals and stripes. We also really love a bedroom that's pattern drenched, using the same pattern on the walls, bed, headboard, etc. It's a playful, vintage-inspired aesthetic that's so fun.'

2. Bring light in with mirrored glass

You’ll no doubt be aware of the light-boosting superpowers of decorating with mirrors, but they can also be used to channel elegance into a bedroom, as Kara Childress well understands.

‘Here, we chose a set of tall mirrors, flanking either side of the bed, to create a light-filled bedroom with a neutral color palette that sets the stage for a calming environment,’ she explains. We love how the open-shelf bedside tables allow a glimpse of the mirror down to the floor, while the subtly foxed glass offers a softer reflection that won’t dazzle in the morning sun.

Whether through mirrored furniture, decorative wall panels, or a statement headboard, strategically placed reflective surfaces can make even the smallest bedrooms feel brighter and more expansive.

3. Make a statement with wall art

(Image credit: Cupla / Gemma McCloskey)

Don’t save your favorite art for public spaces, there’s a lot to love about waking up to art that makes you happy. The bigger the piece, the bolder the statement. Decorating with artwork can create a captivating focal point, drawing the eye and commanding attention within the room. Choose colors that set the tone for the entire room.

‘Introducing personality through outsized art makes a bold statement, infusing spaces with character and vibrancy. Whether it's an oversized painting, sculpture, or installation, I love adding those pieces to serve as captivating focal points, reflecting the unique essence and style of the person and the environment they adorn,’ says interior designer Victoria-Maria Geyer.

A striking piece above the bed or a well-curated collection can transform a bedroom from ordinary to extraordinary.

4. Make the bed extra cozy with curtains

(Image credit: TROVE by Studio Duggan)

Whether used in a small bedroom to create a dedicated bed nook, like this cocooning space above, or in a vast master suite to provide a cozy retreat, pulling drapes around your bed is how savvy designs create an intimate bedscape.

Curtains can be hung from ceiling-mounted rods or installed on a canopy/pelmet-style frame, adding texture, color, and softness to the space. It’s a styling trick that works beautifully in both grand, traditional settings and modern, minimalist spaces.

‘Adding drapery not only provides extra privacy but also turns your bed into a cozy cocoon, secluded from the rest of the world (or at least the rest of the house!),’ says interior designer, Kaitlin McQuaide. ‘Always choose a fabric with some weight to it, or add additional lining, to make sure the appropriate amount of light and sound is blocked out, and at least 2x fullness for your drapery to achieve a luxurious look.’

5. Wake up happy with high-energy color or print

(Image credit: Vaughan Design & Development / Photography Chris Snook)

While we often discuss the bedroom as a space for winding down before bedtime, it is also important to consider how the space makes you feel as you wake up, too.

Embracing vibrant, high-energy patterns in your bedroom decor will infuse your mornings with positivity and set the stage for a productive and fulfilling day ahead. A bright, warm-toned color like citrus orange, sunny yellow, or punchy coral can create a sense of energy. Look to incorporate vibrant prints such as florals or stripes through wallpaper, textiles, or artwork if you're nervous about everything looking too punchy.

While serene neutrals and soft tones often dominate bedroom decor, opting for high-energy hues and bold prints can inject personality, vibrancy, and even a dose of morning motivation.

6. Layer natural materials and textures

Layering natural materials and textures in the bedroom is a sure-fire way to create a calm, inviting retreat. ‘Layers of warm, rigid materials, delicate linens, and lush textures create a serene atmosphere and respectful connection to nature,’ agrees interior designer, Kara Childress, whose signature style is natural and relaxed.

‘The subtle range in color and texture throughout this bedroom [seen above] feels effortless, while also leaving space for personalization through accessorizing,’ she adds.

Go for a variety of textiles, like comforting wool blankets, crisp bed linen, and squishy sheepskin rugs – you’re aiming for a tactile experience that’s cozy and cocooning. Wooden furniture, rattan storage, and woven baskets will provide organic texture and warmth.

7. Bring in subtle pattern with wallpaper

(Image credit: Future / Polly Wreford / Sally Denning)

And of course, not all bedroom wallpaper ideas need to be big and bold. This pretty and delicate oak leaf botanical print from Common Room is a wonderful example of a small-scale wallpaper that feels perfectly suited to a bedroom.

A softly patterned wallpaper can add layers to a space without dominating it. While you can find plenty of beautiful small-scale florals or subtle stripes, plain yet textural wallpapers natural materials like linen, grasscloth, or plaster can also be fantastic for creating a cozy ambiance.

The gentle, pared-back design allows the bold use of color elsewhere to not overwhelm the room. All the different bedroom color ideas work happily together in harmony. The tactile nature of the artwork, contemporary applique cushion, linen headboard, and woven lampshade all add to the welcoming and cozy feel of this space.

8. Use a wall hanging to create a headboard effect

A headboard is often the focal point of a bedroom, but if a traditional upholstered or wooden design doesn’t appeal to you, a wall hanging can be a creative and stylish alternative. A simple length of fabric or a vintage tapestry can be hung to create a stunning wall hanging.

It creates a stunning focal point in the room and is the perfect starting point as inspiration for the color palette, as here with the pink tones which continues throughout the rest of the room.

It also serves to add an extra touch of textile softness, which is always a desirable element in a bedroom space. You can opt for a natural, woven textile in neutral tones for a relaxed, bohemian feel, or choose a bold, patterned vintage rug or a handwoven piece to add history and authenticity to the space.

9. Bring a touch of nostalgia with vintage

For those looking to create a Nancy Meyers aesthetic bedroom, introducing vintage bedroom ideas with furniture and decor is a sure way to bring a lived-in, rom-com feel to the space.

Whether it’s a beautifully aged wardrobe like the one tucked in the corner of this traditional bedroom designed by The Misfit House, an ornate gilded mirror, or a set of antique bedside lamps; vintage elements bring a collected, storied feel to a space.

The key to making these thrifted finds work in a modern space is to keep the color palette light and airy and balance out with pieces that carry contemporary vibes too.

10. Be sure to choose the right bedroom flooring

(Image credit: TROVE by Studio Duggan)

It’s the first thing you step onto in the morning, so picking the perfect bedroom flooring ideas is vital. Unlike high-traffic areas of the home where durability is the main priority, bedroom flooring should prioritize warmth and softness.

While carpet will also reign supreme, wooden floors are also ideal – great if you want to embrace master bedroom ideas with a bath, providing a durable and hardwearing surface, and you can accessorize them with bedroom rugs to ensure comfort, color, and layering are catered to. Global flooring expert, Parador, has noticed a strong shift towards wide plank flooring, which enhances a sense of openness and serenity in bedrooms.

Neel Bradham, CEO at Parador, notes: 'Embracing natural-toned flooring not only lends warmth and depth to a bedroom, but it also offers several practical benefits. These shades are also versatile, fitting seamlessly into both modern and traditional schemes alike.'

11. Wallpaper the bedroom ceiling

If you love the maximalist trend, try papering up to the ceiling for a wow effect – it can help you create a super-relaxed space. The accent ceiling trend has well and truly overtaken the accent wall and encourages you to really make the most of the 5th wall.

Going bigger and more dramatic doesn't have to mean giving up on rest which, after all, is what a bedroom is for. For a soft and serene look, consider a delicate floral print, a subtle textured wallpaper, or even a cloud-like print that enhances relaxation.

But if you want to make a bolder statement, geometric patterns, stripes, and dark, moody tones can bring drama and sophistication to the room. In a bedroom with high ceilings, a darker wallpaper can make the space feel cozier and more enveloping. Meanwhile, a light-reflective or subtly patterned paper in a lower-ceilinged room can create the illusion of more height.

Bedroom furniture ideas

Your bedroom should feel like a retreat, and the bedroom furniture ideas you choose play a major role in creating that sense of comfort and harmony. No matter if you're working with a compact room that demands smart storage solutions or a rather spacious room that calls for statement pieces, thoughtful furniture choices can enhance both style and functionality.

1. Create a statement with your headboard

(Image credit: OWN LONDON / Photography Darren Chung )

More than just a space to rest your head, headboard ideas have really taken off with interior designers in recent years and are a great way to introduce a statement piece to the space.

Kailee Blalock, co-founder of House of Hive, says: 'In 2025, the headboard is no longer just an afterthought – it’s becoming the main feature of a bedroom. Whether it’s upholstered in a bold patterned fabric, or designed with a unique silhouette, the headboard is now the centerpiece, with bedding kept more minimal.'

Vyanca Soto agrees. 'A standout element for 2025? Statement headboards are having a moment. Whether it’s an oversized upholstered headboard in a sumptuous fabric or a custom-crafted wood or plaster design that feels architectural, the bed is elevated into a true focal point.'

For a dramatic and cozy effect, consider an upholstered headboard in a rich fabric like velvet, linen, or boucle but if you prefer a more rustic or vintage-inspired look, opt for a wood-paneled or woven headboard that introduces warmth and natural texture to the space.

2. Ditch hard lines for curves

(Image credit: TROVE by Studio Duggan)

Moving away from straight, sharp, angular forms and opting for curved and rounded silhouettes can create a more soothing, restful environment in the bedroom. A curved headboard, rounded nightstands, or an arched wardrobe can introduce subtle softness without overpowering the space.

Sarah Latham of Latham Interiors says curves are in for 2025. 'It's time to soften those hard lines in the bedroom and give some shape and femininity back to the bedroom space.'

Even small touches, like a curved mirror, a round rug, or circular pendant lighting, can help break up sharp lines and bring a sense of balance.

3. Try a 'shelter' headboard

(Image credit: OWN LONDON / Photography Dean Hearne)

A ‘shelter’ headboard – one that extends beyond the width of the bed, often spanning the entire wall – creates a cocooning effect that instantly elevates a bedroom.

As interior designer Marie Flanigan describes, 'A shelter headboard is a beautiful way to add architecture and warmth to a bedroom. Extending beyond the width of the bed and often affixed to the wall, it creates a sense of enclosure – like a room within a room,' she explains. 'For 2025, we’re seeing a shift toward upholstered or paneled designs in rich, textural fabrics and natural wood finishes, bringing depth and softness to the space. It’s a thoughtful way to frame the bed, anchor the room, and introduce a bespoke touch that feels both timeless and inviting."

'The rise of wide upholstered headboards is a trend likely inspired by the hotel industry,' explains Alicia Meireles, creative director at OWN LONDON. 'These oversized headboards, sometimes spanning the entire headboard wall, create a bespoke and inviting atmosphere.'

4. Encourage bedtime reading with library shelving

(Image credit: Wendy Labrum Interiors. Photography- Heather Talbert )

We’ve all got the memo that reading books is more conducive to a good night’s sleep than blue-light emitting screens but the temptation to scroll is high. Making space for a library nook in your bedroom is a strong visual reminder to reach for a book and put that phone on Do Not Disturb.

Ginger Curtis is onboard. ‘A library-style nook can transform a corner of your bedroom into a cozy and functional space. Incorporate built-in shelves or a bookcase, comfortable seating like a plush armchair or window seat, and adequate lighting for an inviting reading environment,’ she says.

Choose bookshelves in materials that complement your bedroom decor style and offer ample storage for your collection – there’s nothing relaxing about overflowing, cluttered shelves. Even if you’re too tired to read anything come bedtime, the mere presence of books in the bedroom can foster the sense of tranquillity and relaxation found in a library.

5. Go for grandeur with a modern four-poster

There’s nothing like a four-poster bed for making a striking impression. A four-poster bed instantly adds a sense of grandeur and sophistication to a bedroom, but today’s designs are far from the heavy, traditional styles of the past.

Modern four-poster beds feature sleek lines, open frames, and minimalist materials that feel effortlessly elegant without overwhelming the space. Even without drapery, four-poster beds can provide a sense of enclosure and privacy, perfect for achieving a cozy and intimate sleeping environment.

‘Four-poster beds make me think of tradition, but drama, too. They dominate a space,’ says Linda of Linda Eyles Design. ‘Using a modern four-poster bed gives a timeless, almost architectural quality that will be stylish for years to come. It's a quiet glamour.’

6. Bring in Scandi style for a timeless look

Scandinavian style is a classic. Rooted in a neutral color palette, clean lines, and natural materials, Scandi-style bedrooms prioritize comfort without unnecessary clutter.

'Scandinavian design is distinctive for several reasons: pared-back, unfussy, uncluttered spaces and a winning combination of form and function create aesthetically pleasing, yet practical interiors,' explains lifestyle expert at Contura, Catharina Björkman.

The main purpose of Scandinavian design is to improve daily life. Key Scandi-style bedroom furniture includes low-profile beds, wooden or rattan headboards, and streamlined storage solutions. Opting for pale woods like oak, ash, or birch enhances the bright and natural aesthetic.

7. Work in wood for warmth

Whether through furniture, paneling, or subtle decorative accents, incorporating natural wood tones adds depth and a welcoming feel to the bedroom.

Particularly popular of late, we're seeing interior designers and brands really embracing a whole range of wood tones in bedrooms of late. Whether you go all-out with the wood drenching trend (yes it's a thing) or choose to simply include some wooden nightstands, this natural tone helps to add balance to a space.

With pale woods dominating the past few years, the desire for vintage shopping has led to a surge in dark wood pieces like mahogany and walnut. But use it sparingly, a full set of wooden furniture feels too heavy, so mixing in rattan, cane, or lighter wood accents can create a more contemporary look.

8. Bring back the dressing table

(Image credit: TROVE by Studio Duggan)

The dressing table is making a well-deserved comeback, offering both style and practicality in one elegant piece. Once a staple of classic boudoirs, this timeless furniture item adds a touch of luxury to a bedroom, creating a dedicated space for self-care and organization.

Find the perfect spot for your table, whether it’s in a bay window or cleverly slotted into a small alcove.

In a larger bedroom, consider dividing the space into an area for dressing and one for sleeping. In terms of dressing room ideas for your bedroom, a classic dressing table helps create a boudoir feel, but a simple bureau, console, or desk could be perfect for more modern bedroom ideas.

Bedroom bedding ideas

Bedding is the foundation of a well-designed bedroom. But it’s not just about thread count – it’s about the textures, layering, and color choices that all contribute to a beautiful and peaceful environment.

1. Use accent colors to bring a neutral scheme to life

A neutral bedroom can feel effortlessly serene, but without thoughtful layering, it risks looking flat or uninspired. One of the simplest ways to add depth and personality is through accent colors in your bedding.

Here, the prettiest of pinks has been introduced into this serene neutrally decorated guest bedroom with a lightness of touch. From the throw pillows to the rug, these pinks all work together to create a coherent feel without overwhelming the room.

Start with a base of crisp white, soft beige, or warm gray bedding, then layer in accent colors through throw pillows, blankets, or even an upholstered headboard. Earthy tones like terracotta, olive green, or deep navy add richness without overpowering a neutral scheme, while softer pastels like blush or powder blue can create a calming, airy feel.

2. Try hotel-worthy white sheets

If you're looking to design a luxury hotel-style bedroom, it all starts with the bedding. There’s a reason luxury hotels always use crisp white sheets – they instantly create a sense of calm, cleanliness, and indulgence.

Bringing that five-star feel into your own bedroom is easier than you might think, and it starts with investing in high-quality linens.

'Your bedroom should feel like a serene retreat – neutral tones, crisp bedding (you can steam bedding with a steamer for that perfect hotel bedding finish!), and soft layers can create a calming atmosphere,' suggests London-based interior designer Laura Hammett.

'Attention to detail in this room, such as beautifully styled nightstands with large statement lamps and a candle, along with a few carefully chosen accessories such as luxury photo frames with beautiful interior magazine cut outs, can leave a lasting impression.'

3. Introduce accent patterns

(Image credit: TROVE by Studio Duggan)

While solid-colored bedding creates a serene and timeless look, introducing accent patterns can add depth, personality, and visual interest to your bedroom.

This can be done with linens, like a plaid pillow case, or with accessories such as throw pillows and blankets.

'The use of accent patterns is gaining traction, as homeowners move away from bland, monochromatic designs,' adds Alicia from OWN LONDON. 'While some embrace bold patterns on curtains or beds, others opt for a more subtle approach, incorporating patterned cushions to add visual interest. Regardless of the level of commitment to a pattern, the consensus is clear: sterile, one-tone bedrooms are falling out of favor in favor of more dynamic and character-filled spaces.'

4. Layer up textures and materials

A well-designed bedroom isn’t just about color and pattern. Texture also plays a crucial role in making the space feel inviting and layering up your bed is a designer trick that you can easily achieve in your home too.

The palette in this room is ultra simple, yet it feels anything but plain – instead, a sense of texture and softness is created by expertly combining to patteren and texture. ‘The trick is to layer materials for subtle contrast,’ says Bernie de Le Cuona, founder of textiles brand de Le Cuona.

‘It’s all about mixing natural textures to create depth and a sense of cocooning. Everything should be a joy to touch – even with plain designs, the result will then be a flow of “pattern”.’

FAQs

How do I make my bedroom stylish?

To make a bedroom look stylish, it is first vital that it's uncluttered and has enough storage. Part of this process will include decluttering, but ensuring your bedroom furniture is the right size – not too big nor too small – and that it is fit for purpose is vital.

With that done, you can begin to focus on what might be your focal point, whether a majestic bed, beautiful bedroom wallpaper ideas or perhaps even an antique rug. Styling a bed will help your bedroom feel stylish almost more than anything else, though other touches to add might be an armchair – whether you use it or not, it will make the space feel more relaxing and inviting – and sumptuous curtains, which can add pattern, block out light, and give your bedroom a hotel appeal.

If you are also wondering 'how can I make my bedroom look expensive?' then you might want to consider small decorative details, such as bedroom rugs, statement lampshades, affordable art or layers of pillows and cushions.

How do you style a bedroom?

It is the most private room in the house, so your decorating approach can be the most personal, but there are still some key considerations when planning a bedroom revamp. Take note of our design rules to help you create a bedroom sanctuary to escape to at the end of a long day.

Before you start, think about how you will use the room. It’s unusual for a bedroom to be only about sleep – there are often other functions to consider, such as dressing, applying makeup or even a workspace. Look at your belongings to assess how much storage you require.

Which items of furniture are key to your room and must be included? Pare back as much as possible. Do you want a calm and tranquil retreat that’s designed as a quiet and soothing space, or a room that feels invigorating and refreshing first thing in the morning?

What should every bedroom have?

Every bedroom should have practical, functional storage. It is important to keep your bedroom clear so you can relax and unwind at the beginning and end of the day.

Write a list of everything you need to store in the bedroom so that you can work out how much drawer and hanging space you require. Look at fitted versus freestanding for choices. Fitted will answer the problem of awkward corners and uneven walls, and freestanding pieces act as focal points. Combine both styles for a more relaxed look.

Think tall and use the vertical space your room has to offer. Consider deep shelves high on the wall for things that aren’t used frequently, and make the most of tall cupboards and wardrobes. Make it dual-purpose so that furniture works harder. Use the top of a chest of drawers as a dressing table, or build a window seat with hidden storage underneath.

Choose a statement bed and position it so that it’s the first thing to grab your attention as you enter the room. Opt for a design that will immediately define the style of the rest of the space, whether it’s a glamorous bateau or a glossy platform. Add a headboard or hand a piece of striking art above the bed to draw the eye. To make the headboard a real feature, go for something super-sized, or upholster it in a bold color or print. Use lighting to make sure your bed takes center stage. Consider an oversized pendant light above the bed, or hang a pair on either side to visually frame it.

Make a statement with curtains and blinds. Use color, pattern, and texture to turn them into an integral feature of the bedroom’s overall design. Invest in quality for the best finish and performance. High-quality, heavy curtain material offers greater light, heart, and noise insulation, and will last longer.

Invest in anti-allergy bed linen. Choose bedding that is specially designed for allergy sufferers to reduce irritation while you sleep. Of course, remember to change your bedding regularly to get rid of dust mites and allergens, too.
