Beauty and the Beast resumes at Sunderland Empire after Covid cancellations

Disney has announced that the Sunderland run of Beauty and the Beast - the Musical is back on track after an outbreak of Covid caused the show to be cancelled at the weekend.

The lavish production had completed just over a week of its stint at Sunderland Empire when it had to be called off on Sunday due to "Covid-enforced absences" within its cast and crew.

While no performance was due on Monday, Tuesday's sell-out show was similarly cancelled despite hopes it would be able to go ahead.

Disney has now confirmed that this Wednesday's performance will be able to proceed as planned.

In a statement on social media, shared by the theatre, it said: "We are pleased to confirm that performances of Beauty and the Beast will resume at the Sunderland Empire on Wednesday, February 2."

It added: "Thank you for your continued support."

Among the responses to the announcement from relieved ticketholders were Facebook comments: "This is great news"; "Ah am so pleased" and "fantastic news".

And on Twitter one ticketholder said: "We have been on countdown for weeks. I am thrilled you've been able to resume the show."

But another tweeted: "I'm gutted I wont be able to come seeing as I'd be travelling from quite a long way away and had to make the decision earlier on Tuesday to cancel travel plans as it just seemed too risky and not really the right time."

While those affected by the cancellations are likely to have received a notification and information by email, the theatre has not commented on how many people have been affected or upon the refund policy.

Among Facebook comments from customers was one asking: "So what happens to the people that shows got cancelled, still no email" while another reported receiving an email on the day of the cancellation with another expected to follow.
