Beautiful west coast of Scotland island up for sale for just £350k

For just £350k, you can land yourself a beautiful island off the west coast of Scotland.

Boasting its own lighthouse and a helipad as well as accommodation, the uninhabited island of Pladda is located near the southern coast of Arran.

As reported by the Daily Record, the Firth of Clyde island of Pladda is only about 700m long and just over 33 acres in size. You may have spotted it from the Arran ferry from Ardrossan, recognisable small teardrop-shaped landmass.

The £350k sale comes with a former Lighthouse Keeper’s accommodation including two reception rooms, five bedrooms and a bathroom, as well as a separate accommodation including a bedroom, shower room, kitchen and sitting room.

Tom Stewart-Moore of estate agents Knight Frank, said that there is also an extensive range of traditional outbuildings with "development potential", alongside a former walled garden extending to about 2.5 acres and even a helipad.

He added: "From the lighthouse and range of associated buildings, there are dramatic far-reaching views looking South to Ailsa Craig, the Kintyre Peninsula and Northern Ireland on a clear day."

And those worried about having to man the lighthouse needn't, first installed on the island in 1790, the station was fully automated in 1990 and is now remotely monitored from the Northern Lighthouse Boards Headquarters in Edinburgh.

Accessible by boat and helicopter, the island is just under a mile from the nearby island of Arran with Glasgow easily accessible from Ardrossan.

Mr Stewart-Moore confirmed that the accommodation has not been used in recent years and will need to be upgraded.

To the east of the buildings, there are the wonderful extensive former Keeper’s walled gardens. With high stone-built walls, they extend to about 2.5 acres in total. Previously used to grow fruit and vegetables for the Keepers, the gardens have now all gone to grass.

The island is an important breeding ground and stop-off point for a variety of migratory seabirds.

Over 100 species of birds have been recorded on Pladda island in the past. The island has successful breeding colonies of Artic Terns, a variety of gull species, Turnstones and Shags.
