'Beautiful' Leeds mum-of-three, 39, dies of cancer which doctor said is rarer than being struck by lightning

A mum has died after battling a rare form of cancer, which her doctor said was rarer than being struck by lightning.

The "beautiful" Leeds mum to two sons, and a daughter, battled stage four gastric cancer for 14 months. Lisa died on July 10 age 39 and leaves behind her friends and family who "love her so much".

Lisa's battle began when she had a helicobacter pylori (known as H.pylori). Lisa was told that it was unlikely she had cancer as stomach cancer is usually diagnosed in people over 60, and more common in men.

However, her family said "doctors did not follow up" on her infection and she was later diagnosed with the rare cancer. Lisa's oncologist said she had more chance of being struck by lightning than getting this form of cancer.

Now her family's mission is to keep Lisa's memory alive for her children, but also to help raise awareness of stomach cancer.

"Even if it helps just one other person receive an earlier diagnosis", Lisa's sister Michelle Britton said. She added: "Please look out for the symptoms and any unusual stomach pains please see your doctor and ask for more tests."

Lisa's family recently started a crowdfunding page on Go Fund Me in order to buy a memorial plot in Whinmoor Cemetery.

The family will also be taking on the Three Peaks challenge at the end of September to raise money for stomach cancer charities. Speaking about what Lisa was like, sister Michelle said: "Our beautiful amazingly talented sister sadly passed away on July 10. Lisa left behind three devastated children and heartbroken family and friends who love her so much.

"Anyone that knew our Lisa, knew she was just one of a kind, she had the biggest heart she was so caring and was the most selfless person we have ever met. Even when she was battling this horrible disease alongside intense chemo, radiotherapy and suffering a blood clot on her lung, She never once complained."

Michelle added: "She always had a smile on her face. Lisa fought her battle for 14 months and we couldn't be more proud of her if we tried. This is why we vowed to keep Lisa's memory alive as not only did the children loose their mum but also their home and as a family we feel its important that they have a place to go.
