Motherwell star Dean Cornelius says a win in this afternoon’s Premiership clash at St Johnstone would be a massive boost for his side, going into the World Cup break.
The 21-year-old midfielder knows results haven’t often gone with performances for the Steelmen recently, but reckons a win in Perth would go down nicely ahead of the month-long hiatus.
But he says belief must be strong, whether it’s St Johnstone, Aberdeen, Celtic or Rangers they’re playing.
He said: “It’s important to end with a victory. We don’t want to brush it down or anything, but Saturday for us is huge.
“I think all the boys would agree that with the break coming up for the World Cup, everybody wants to finish on a high.
“It will really feel like an upbeat start to your two weeks off, you don’t want to be dwelling on a defeat, especially with the form we’re on at the moment which is not ideal.
“Saturday is a chance to push again and get the three points.
“In some of the games I don’t think we’ve played at the levels that we want to play at, but there’s also games that there have been fine margins.
“Some have been poor goals that are avoidable, but in the Celtic game there [2-1 defeat on Wednesday] we limited them to very little chances, an d that’s a top side who have created how many chances against the likes of Real Madrid in the Champions League, etc.
“There are positives to take there, but at the end of the day it’s a competitive league, it’s all about getting three points, and un fortunately we’ve not been doing that as much as we would like to.
“Saturday is a huge game and a win would top off a relatively decent start for us.”
Cornelius has had a real taste for life in the top flight, and reckons most teams can take points off of each other, which Motherwell will hope to take more advantage of after the break.
He said: “There are some really good sides, everyone can beat anyone, and that’s the attitude we need to have in every game.
“We can’t go into games not believing we’re going to win, , because how are you supposed to get the fans behind you? If we don’t believe they’re not going to believe.
“If you don’t believe you’re going to win, you’re not, it’s as simple as that.
“In every single game you need to go in with the right attitude, the right mind-set, and every team is the exact same. At the end of the day it’s 11 v 11.
“So a win would be a massive boost.
“It’s then a time to recharge the batteries, take your rest, and everyone will do that and enjoy it.
“But it’s also a time to work hard and try to get ahead of others.
“I’m sure the boys will put in the work and then when we come back it’s all about straight back into the form we can try and find straight away, and get three points every week.”
