The Chicago Bears hired former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson on Monday as their new head coach, and they have been busy trying to build out his new coaching staff. We may see a couple of former New Orleans Saints coaches within it.
It was already reported that Johnson’s top candidate for his defensive coordinator was former Saints head coach Dennis Allen. Now, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has shared that they are “heavily pursuing” New Orleans interim coach Darren Rizzi for their special teams opening. Rizzi is still searching for a full-time head coach gig, but it seems that the Bears are the favorites to land him if he does not. Schefter adds that “over a half-dozen teams” are keeping tabs on Rizzi’s whereabouts in case he’s available.
Now only would this mean a potential reunion between Rizzi and Allen, but it would not be long until the Saints have to see them again as the two teams are scheduled to face off in Chicago next season.
