For the first time in his young NFL career, Justin Fields is preparing as the Bears’ starting quarterback. While that’s certainly beneficial in itself, Fields is also learning a new offense under Luke Getsy, which presents some challenges.
It’s Fields’ second offense in as many NFL seasons, and there’s certainly going to be growing pains along the way — for all parties. Which was the case during Thursday’s final voluntary minicamp practice.
Bears beat writers Brad Biggs and Courtney Cronin noted that it was a particularly rocky day for Fields on Thursday, including during 7-on-7 drills. Cronin said there was some frustration on Fields’ part. But he did connect with wide receivers Darnell Mooney and Byron Pringle.
Expect a choppy moments with a new staff & playbook but today's minicamp practice would generously be described as a rough ride for QB Justin Fields, especially in 7-on-7, a drill heavily tilted to favor the offense.

Day 3 of Bears voluntary minicamp wrapped. No new absences to report. Team did 7on7, 11on11 last two periods. Up and down day for Justin Fields. Looked good on a couple plays where he connected w/ Darnell Mooney, Byron Pringle. Looked a little frustrated other times; threw an INT

While there might be some fans who want to immediately hit the panic button, it’s important to note that we’re in late April and it’s the first time Fields and the rest of the Bears offense has hit the practice field with Getsy’s scheme in mind. They’re still learning the offense, a process that will continue through training camp.
Not to mention, the Bears roster is going to look different after the NFL draft, where they’re expected to add some new faces on offense, including another playmaking wide receiver for Fields.
News of Fields’ rocky practice is sure to have some spawning some bold and unnecessary takes. But just remember that Fields is getting what he didn’t get last year: valuable starting reps in practice.
