As expected, Bears defensive end Robert Quinn wasn’t present for the first day of mandatory minicamp on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Quinn wasn’t expected to show up for mandatory minicamp, although he is training on his own away from the team.
Naturally, Quinn’s absence was a hot topic heading into head coach Matt Eberflus’ press conference. But before the media could ask, Eberflus acknowledged that he wouldn’t address the Quinn situation — leaving it to general manager Ryan Poles to deal with.
“We’re not talking about that as an organization,” Eberflus said. “Obviously we hoped he would be here. He’s not. Ryan (Poles) and his staff are going to work through that.”
When asked about whether Quinn’s absence was excused, Eberflus confirmed it was not.
There has been plenty of trade speculation involving Quinn dating back to the NFL draft process, where a number of teams made it known they were interested. But Poles shut down the possibility.
Quinn skipped the entirety of the voluntary portion of Chicago’s offseason program, and there is speculation about his future with the Bears after failing to show up for mandatory minicamp.
If Quinn doesn’t show up training camp, that’s when it’s time to start worrying.
