Bears HC Matt Eberflus encouraged by Justin Fields’ progress

Bears quarterback Justin Fields certainly appears to have turned a corner over the last couple of games.

Fields has shown impressive improvement in the passing game against the Broncos and Commanders, where he’s completed 67 percent of his passes for 617 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception. He’s tied for the second-most touchdown passes (11) among quarterbacks through the first five games.

Head coach Matt Eberflus has been encouraged by Fields’ progression over the last couple of weeks, and he’s looking for continued consistency.

“When you look at the growth that he has had over the year, of this year, it’s been really good,” Eberflus said. “The steps he has taken the last couple of weeks has been where we all want it to go. He’s done that. We just got to keep building on that. Just being the consistent performer that he is. He’s always going to work hard in practice. He’s always going to work his tail off to get that done.

“Putting himself in position and us as coaches putting him in position to succeed is paramount. He has done a good job with that the last couple weeks. We just got to keep building on that and being able to distribute the ball to different skill in our offense is going to be paramount going forward.”

Fields still has plenty to prove over these last 12 games with his future in question. The Bears are trending toward a top-five draft pick — picks with the Panthers’ first-rounder — and they could be in line for a quarterback if Fields doesn’t prove to be the guy.

But, for now, Fields’ performance over the last couple of weeks has silenced calls for projected No. 1 pick Caleb Williams.
