We’re just a few days away from the start of free agency, where Bears general manager Ryan Poles will look to address some glaring roster holes.
It’s certainly been a busy couple of days for Poles, where he’s made some tough but necessary moves to get some bad contracts off the books and free up a ton of salary cap space in 2023 and beyond.
The Bears traded star pass rusher Khalil Mack to the Chargers for a 2022 second-round pick, a 2023 sixth-round selection and got Los Angeles to take on all of Mack’s contract. Chicago is also releasing running back Tarik Cohen and defensive tackle Eddie Goldman.
With those recent moves, the Bears currently sit at $36.9 million in salary cap space for the 2022 season, according to Spotrac. That’s the sixth-most cap space in the NFL just days ahead of free agency.
And there are more moves Poles could make this offseason to free up more cap space for 2022 and beyond. Linebacker Danny Trevathan is expected to be released at some point while guys like quarterback Nick Foles and edge rusher Jeremiah Attaochu could also be released.
The Bears are sitting in a good position ahead of free agency, where they have the cap flexibility to make some splashes, if that’s what Poles wants. And with the importance of building around quarterback Justin Fields, there are some big moves to be made.
