The NFL combine is a time when teams can as get very creative when interviewing draft prospects. The Bears are in one of the more interesting situations entering the draft, as they have the No. 1 pick and want to be extremely careful when evaluating players. Typically, that evaluation process doesn’t include games, though.
Chicago general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus shared that when speaking with players, their interview room has both a putting green and a dart board and explained why.
“I think some of the best players in this league—their passionate about football and we want to see that come out of them,” Poles said. “We want to see their competitive side come out of them.”
Poles went on to explain that the goal is to get the players loosened up and to see how competitive they are.
Despite the Bears having the No. 1 pick in April’s draft, they may not use it to take the presumptive top pick in Alabama quarterback Bryce Young. ESPN reported Monday that the team is leaning toward trading the pick as they already have a franchise signal-caller in Justin Fields.
It remains to be seen what they do with the pick, but Poles maintained that the team would weigh all options.
