The Chicago Bears are finalizing a deal to hire Ryan Poles as their next general manager, according to multiple NFL insiders.
Poles, who served as the Chiefs assistant director of player personnel, was considered to be a favorite to land the Bears GM job. In fact, he was a finalist for two other franchises: the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants.
Poles was in Chicago for this second interview on Tuesday, where Bears Chairman George McCaskey actually picked him up from the airport himself. It was an indication Chicago could make a move as early as Tuesday, and they did.
Given Poles was a finalist for the Vikings GM job, the Bears acted quickly — not letting Poles leave Halas Hall before locking him down as their new GM.
Bears fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the hiring of Poles, which left most of the fanbase pretty excited. Poles was considered a rising star within the Chiefs organization, where he’s been involved in scouting Patrick Mahomes and has been part of a franchise that’s made the AFC Championship in each of the last three years.
While there’s excitement and a little uncertainty, the general consensus among fans is they want McCaskey to get out of the way and let Poles do his job. Next up: Hiring a head coach.
