Bears quarterback Justin Fields has been one of the NFL’s most electric players over the last month, and he’s the reason why Chicago has been able to keep some high-scoring affairs close over the last five games.
Before last Sunday’s loss to the Falcons, the Bears were averaging 31 points per game, which should be more than enough to win. Unfortunately, Chicago was also giving up 38 points per game during that span. So it’s not exactly a recipe for success.
The Bears offense had their worst performance since the mini-bye week against Atlanta, which wasn’t exactly terrible but not up to par with their performances in the previous four games. They were held to 24 points and once again failed to lead a fourth-quarter comeback, which ended with a Fields interception.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Fields tried to apologize to his defensive teammates for not doing enough to win the game. And what happened next was incredible.

My understanding is Fields’ defensive teammates stopped him as he was finishing the apology, told him they had his back. Really cool moment for everyone there, and a nice sign of where Matt Eberflus has taken the culture in Chicago.

It’s a sign of great leadership from Fields, especially considering him and the offense had put up 33, 29, 32 and 30 points over the last month and were let down by the defense.
Meanwhile, Fields’ draft mate, Jets quarterback Zach Wilson, is garnering attention for poor leadership. Following New York’s 10-3 loss to the Patriots, Wilson said he didn’t feel like he let the defense down. Now, he’s left dealing with the fallout.
