Bear Necessities: We’ve likely seen the last of Chicago’s starters in preseason

The Chicago Bears defeated the Seattle Seahawks 27-11 in their second preseason, which likely marks the end of any action for starters.

With the preseason trimmed from four to three games, this final preseason game will be treated as that fourth game once was — as in the starters won’t play so as to prevent injury in an unnecessary game.

Someone like newly-minted right guard Teven Jenkins could get a brief look, especially considering he just started practicing at the position last week. But outside of that, don’t expect to see starters out there.

“We’re going to look at that,” said head coach Matt Eberflus. “We’ll evaluate our football team and see where we are. I’ll have a coordinators’ meeting sometime (Saturday) and we’ll get everybody’s opinion and go from there.”

The starters saw limited reps against the Seahawks on Thursday, and the Bears were lucky to come out of these first two games without significant injuries to any starters.

But next Saturday’s game against the Browns shouldn’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things, at least for the starters, who feel ready for the regular season.

“I feel ready (for the regular season),” left guard Cody Whitehair said. “The coaches do a great job preparing us in practice. The routine that we go through is a good dress rehearsal for the season. Our camp has been good. It’s been intense. I feel ready to go.”

Safety Eddie Jackson believes the practice tempo has helped prepare them for the start of the regular season, and he also feels ready to go.

“There are a few things to clean up, but yeah, we’re ready,” Jackson said. “The way we practice, it’s high speed and high tempo and we’re flying around. So it’s kind of like a game.”
