Receiver Chase Claypool made his Bears debut in last Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins, where he caught two passes for 13 yards. It wasn’t a particularly flashy debut, but that was to be expected given he had been traded to Chicago just five days prior.
While Claypool’s career in Pittsburgh got off to a hot start, he’d experienced a bit of a setback with the Steelers. But when one door closes, another one opens. And that’s certainly the case with Claypool, who sees this opportunity with the Bears as a fresh start after the Steelers appeared to lose faith in him.
“I think they look at me as a valuable player, obviously,” Claypool said, via NBC Sports Chicago. “That’s why they traded for me. I just think they will give me more opportunities to make plays and stuff like that.
“Not even the focal point as if I’m the only one who could do it,” Claypool later added. “But you’ve got like four or five plays where you could get a good chunk of yards rather than, ‘here’s your one play of the week. Make sure you make a play on this no matter what the coverage is.’”
For a Bears passing game that has lacked explosion, Claypool should find more chances to serve as a playmaker in Luke Getsy’s offense, especially with quarterback Justin Fields.
“I think there’s just more opportunity,” Claypool said. “I think [offensive coordinator Luke Getsy] does a good job of giving you a chance to win on your routes regardless of where the coverage is. He’ll add little things in the route to help you get open.”
