Beanies Coffee tackles pod market with new compostable products for UK and export

Flavoured coffee maker Beanies is looking to rival industry heavyweights with the launch of compostable coffee pods.

The County Durham-based firm, which supplies major UK retailers and exports, is moving into the market with its Nespresso-compatible pods that come in vanilla, caramel and hazelnut flavours. Having picked up a Queen's Award for International Trade in 2022, Beanies will sell the products in the UK and its 35 export destinations.

Mark Stangroom, Beanies’ sales and marketing director, said: "After already having considerable success with our flavoured instant coffees, which culminated in receiving a Queen’s Award For International Trade last year, we saw an opportunity for coffee pods with ‘full-on-flavour’ both in the UK market and abroad. We’ve started with three classics, but, with over 40 flavours in instant, there’s plenty of room to expand the range further.”

Late last year the 46-strong firm, which operates out of a Darlington base, revealed it had started selling to Australia after online sales peaked during Covid. The firm said it was keen to build up sales again and hailed markets in South Africa, India, Malaysia, and Japan as an opportunity to do so.

Beanies was launched in 2013 and has since established a range of unusual flavours including sticky toffee pudding, jam doughnut and chocolate orange. Its products - which include jars of instant granules, sachets and gift sets - are available in stores such as Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Lidl and Home Bargains.

Amid criticism of the environmental impact of coffee pods, the firm has looked to make its offering as sustainable as possible.

Mr Stangroom added: "We are working towards reducing our carbon and environmental impact with every new product launch, so it was important to us that the new coffee pods offered a sustainable option for those who prefer the convenience of single-use. Standard plastic and aluminium pods take hundreds of years to break down. Our pods are TUV-Austria OK Compost Home certified and will decompose within 26 weeks in the right conditions, which is even quicker than garden grass cuttings."
