Be the first to play the next big Canberra card game

Crowdfunding has started to help produce the next version of the homegrown Canberra card game Go Bum ("The cheeky version of Go Fish").

Fisher dad Evan Turner and his seven-year-old daughter Maggie have come up with Go Bum Animals - but they need Canberra's help to make it a reality.

Their campaign on Kickstarter aims to raise $5000 in just one week to cover the manufacturing for the new game, which is all about finding the matching, family-friendly animal bums.

Among the cards in the new game are the Fancy Bum (peacock), Cuddly Bum (panda), Bouncy Bum (kangaroo) and Shiny Bum (glow worm).

Backing the first print run means supporters can get a copy of the game and be among the first to play it.

The crowdfunding campaign only runs until Wednesday, August 21.

A family favourite

The original Go Bum game was made by Evan and his now 10-year-old son Levi as a creative home-school project during the COVID lockdowns.

It's since gone on to become a favourite family game for thousands of families and stocked in more than 30 outlets.

"So far, we have sold over 2600 copies of Go Bum. There's 50 bum cards in each pack so that's 130,000 Go Bum cards out in the world," Evan said.

The original game matched fun bums like pirate bums and plumber's bums.

The Go Bum Animals version was developed this time with Maggie, a year one student at Arawang Primary.

"We had wanted to do an animals version for a long time and our customers asking for a new version of Go Bum got our butts into gear to make it," Evan said.

Maggie's classmates can't wait to play the new game. And they're not the only ones.

"My teacher, Ms Manners, she thought it was great," she said.

Proceeds from the sale of the card games also go to helping endangered animals and the homeless.

"Maggie's heart is really about helping homeless people," Evan said.

While the dynamic duo have a sample of Go Bum Animals made, the next step is international manufacturing and shipping so the game can be in the shops by November, in time for Christmas.

All the artwork is ready to go, with Maggie helping with the initial sketches. Evan and Dewy Venerius did the final illustrations and graphic design.

The gamble with Kickstarter crowdfunding is that it must reach its target in one week or else no money is collected.

Evan has set a target of $5000, with more than $1300 raised by Thursday, ahead of Wednesday's deadline.

People who support the project can choose a reward of the new Go Bum Animals card game when it is released.

Evan went through the same process with the original Go Bum game and it was a success.

For him, it's all about sharing his childhood love of card games and board games with his own children - and those around Australia.

Go Bum Animals includes added actions players have to perform. So when someone gets the Wiggle Bum (a puppy) match, the player has to stand up and wiggle their bum. When someone gets the Rock Hard Bum (a clam) match, they play scissors, paper, rock with another player of their choice.

"We love playing board games and card games," Evan said.

"It gets people around the table, it gets kids off the screens and, with Go Bum, there's lots of laughs."
