BBC Best Interests viewers react to Sharon Horgan's 'superb' performance in heartbreaking drama

BBC viewers have reacted to Sharon Horgan's performance in the brand-new four-part mini-series Best Interests.

Sharon, 52, stars alongside Michael Sheen in the drama centred around a couple whose young daughter, played by a young Dublin actress Niamh Moriarty, 16, gets diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, as they battle it out to keep her alive.

And fans were full of high praise for the Irish actress, known for her comedy acting, after the first episode aired on Monday night, calling her 'superb'.

One took to Twitter to write: "Sharon Horgan really is superb in everything she does, isn’t she? Entirely believable whoever she’s playing. In whatever genre. #BestInterests"

Another wrote: "That was brilliant I loved the shards of humour shining through the hospital windows #BestInterests"

A third said: "#BestInterests I am in bits but it's beautifully told and performed, and it's a story that needs telling. Brilliantly done."

Meanwhile, others praised the show but called it a 'tough watch' due to its heartbreaking theme.

One wrote: "Sharon Horgan and Michael Sheen, both fantastic to watch in #BestInterests. It's a hard and emotional watch."

Another said: "#BestInterests , wow, Sharon Horgan & Michael Sheen are so good in this.. a tough watch for sure @BBCOne."

The show, written by BAFTA winner Jack Thorne, sees Sharon delve deep into a personal struggle that she felt she related to due to an experience in her own in real life. Her daughter, who is now 19, fell very ill at 16 months, and Sharon wasn't sure if she was going to make it.

She told OK! Magazine that she felt "really connected" to her character Nicci with her attitude as a mother always being to do everything in her power to keep her alive.

Despite the raw emotion, seriousness and devastating theme of the show as Nicci and Andrew (Michael Sheen) go to court separately to fight a battle to keep their daughter alive, Sharon conceded that they had a lot of fun and laughs on set.

Michael Sheen told The Guardian that the show is "difficult to watch". His character Andrew doesn't back Nicci's legal challenge against doctors, who want to end their daughter's life due to illness.

Best Interests started on Monday, June 12 at 9pm, BBC One and will run for four consecutive nights.
